At its core, darts is a simple sport: hit exactly 501 point in the fewest throws possible. But as any darts fan or darts punter will tell you, that's just the beginning.
As a sport darts has grown hugely in popularity in recent years. From its humble beginnings as a pub game played along the length and breadth of the British Isles, since the 70s and 80s Darts has experienced steady growth into a spectator sport and major TV spectacle in its own right.
While the majority of pro players still hail from the nations of the UK, talent is increasingly being drawn from continental Europe including the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. The current world number one Michael van Gerwen is Dutch and has a huge following in the UK and across the darts world.
The recent history of darts is somewhat fraught. In 1992 with new funding streams coming into sports from satellite television that helped to develop the professionalisation of darts, the sport experienced a major split. Two rival World Championships were born: the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) and the British Darts Organisation (BDO). The former was broadcast on Sky TV and offered players a larger prize fund, and it is this darts organisation which has risen as the prominent one.
