Copa America Betting
England may be the country that birthed the world’s most popular sport, but it was Brazil that shaped it into the beautiful game we know it as today.
Now South America’s premier footballing competition is back on Brazilian shores and it’s definitely not one to miss this time round.
South American football has all the hallmarks of a type of progressive, attacking football that we’ve all come to love, with the passion of the fans to match it.
Every World Cup we see the fans from South America, whether it be Argentina or Brazil, Uruguay or Chile, flock in their droves with their unique brand of colour and noise. Imagine a football tournament run by them, for them and dominated by them and you truly have a spectacle to witness.
Welcome to the Copa America and to Copa America betting
It’s not just the crowds, the passion and the style of football that makes the Copa America a truly special tournament to behold. The Copa America is flamboyant and unpredictable, making it one of the best football competitions to bet on in the world today.
Whether you back Messi’s Argentina, or Brazil’s Neymar, nothing in the Copa America is a given and the tournament is rife with upsets and surprises.
But with unpredictability comes opportunity and when you get involved with Copa America betting you’ll soon learn that the odds are higher than most other major football tournaments.
Let’s take a look at what some of the most popular types of Copa America betting punter get involved in.
Copa America Betting: Copa America Winner
Betting on the Copa America winner is one of the most popular bets you can place. The same is true for many tournaments, not just in football but across a wide range of sports.
The odds for a tournament winner are usually released before any others and the biggest or most successful teams based on past performance are likely to be selected as favourites.
The favourites ahead of tournament will have the lowest odds, while the outsiders will have higher odds.
For a tournament like the Copa America the odds are traditionally higher than other tournaments. This is all down to the unpredictability of South American football compared to its European counterpart.
Brazil are the favourites for this year’s tournament and you can find a full list of Copa America winners odds above.
If you’re considering betting on the Copa America winner or placing a tournament or outright bet it’s always good to do your research. Below we’ve listed key things to look out for when placing a bet on the Copa America winner.
- Current form: how has the team been performing in their longer term and immediate preparations for the tournament?
- Form in most recent tournaments: how has the team performed in previous Copa Americas or even if they took part in last year’s World Cup. You need to be able to make a distinction between friendly matches and competitive games to appreciate the true form of a team going into a major tournament.
- Squad selection: Who is the manager likely to select? Are there any injury concerns? Who has the manager picked in recent games ahead of the tournament?
Copa America Betting: Copa America Top Scorer
Another popular form of Copa America betting across the whole tournament is to bet on who will be the Copa America top scorer.
The odds for the Copa America top scorer haven’t been released yet because the squads for the tournament haven’t yet been decided.
As with placing a bet on the Copa America winner there are a number of important things to consider ahead of placing a bet on the Copa America top scorer. Let’s take a look below.
- Current form: How has that player been performing for club as well as country. Does the player stand out in key games and at tournaments?
- How many games will he play?: Is the player first on the team sheet or utilised more as a squad
- How far will his team go? It’s important to consider how far the player’s team will go in the tournament. The more games played, the higher the chances of scoring more goals
- What kinds of tactics will the team deploy? It’s important to know what kind of team your player is playing in. A world class striker might have huge potential but negative tactics can severely hinder a player’s potential to score goals.
Copa America Betting: Betting on the Match
Betting on individual matches is one of the most popular ways to bet on a tournament and to get involved in Copa America betting. For a major tournament like the Copa America, a wide range of betting sites seek to offer a massive amount of odds markets for individual games.
Betting on the match result
Betting on the result of a match is without a doubt one of the most popular forms of football betting and that’s no different when it comes to Copa America betting.
Placing a bet on the match result is quick, easy and simple, just some of the reasons as to why it’s such a popular hit with many punters.
Match odds or odds for the full time result are the most common type of odds market you’ll find available. Any betting site that offers Copa America betting and Copa America odds will undoubtedly have match result markets on offer before anything else.
On some betting sites you will see match result odds written as (1X2). This refers to the three different potential outcomes you have to bet on. Betting on the home side in the match is written as (1), betting on a draw is written as (X) and betting on the away side is written as (2).
Double chance
Double chance is another way of saying that you will back two of the three available options when it comes to betting on the match result. This can either be by backing the home team and a draw (1X), backing the away team and a draw (X2) or betting on either team to win the match (12)
If you choose to back the home team and a draw (1X) you would win the bet with either of those outcomes, whereas an away team win would constitute a loss.
If you choose to back a draw and an away team win (X2) either of those outcomes would win you the bet, whereas a home team win would constitute as a losing bet.
If you would choose to back either a home team or away team win (12) you would win the bet if either team was to win the match. If the match ended in a draw
Let's say Brazil are playing Argentina (Brazil vs. Argentina) in the Copa America final and you're not sure who to back. You decide to bet double chance to give yourself more options.
Option 1: You bet double chance on a home team win or a draw (1X)
- Brazil win = winning bet ✅
- Draw after regular time = winning bet ✅
- Argentina win = losing bet ❌
Option 2: You bet double chance on an away team win or a draw (X2)
- Argentina win = winning bet ✅
- Draw after regular time = winning bet ✅
- Brazil win = losing bet ❌
Option 3: You bet double chance on either team winning the match (12)
- Brazil win = winning bet ✅
- Argentina win = winning bet ✅
- Draw = losing bet ❌
Draw no bet (DNB)
The option of placing a draw no bet (DNB) gives you a form of insurance policy in your match result bet. A draw no bet differs from a double chance bet in one key manner. A double chance gives you two chances to place a winning bet, whereas a draw no bet still only gives you one.
A draw no bet involves you placing a bet on either the home team or away team winning the match. In the event of a draw taking place you would receive your stake back.
It’s important to remember that with both a double chance bet and a draw no bet the odds that are on offer are likely to be lower due to the fact that with a double chance you are placing less risk by backing two outcomes. Similarly with a draw no bet, the risk of you losing your bet is lower given that one of the options, a draw, would see your initial stake returned.
Let's say you're betting on a Copa America group match between Colombia and Paraguay (Colombia vs. Paraguay). You're fairly sure that you think one of the teams will win the game, but because they are fairly evenly matched you think it might end in a draw. You decide to place a draw no bet on the match to give yourself some insurance.
Option 1: You decide to place a draw no bet on Colombia winning the match
- Colombia win = winning bet ✅
- The game ends in a draw = money bet ➖
- Paraguay win = losing bet ❌
Option 2: You decide to place a draw no bet on Paraguay winning the match
- Paraguay win = winning bet ✅
- The game ends in a draw = money bet ➖
- Colombia win = losing bet ❌
Goal bets: Both teams to score (BTTS)
Placing a bet on an individual game isn’t limited to the match result. One of the most popular ways to bet on individual matches is to place a goal bet. This is no different when it comes to Copa America betting.
Betting both teams to score (often written BTTS) in a match is a great option if you’re unsure which team will win the game, or even if the game will end in a draw.
If you think that both teams have a fairly strong attack, particularly weak defence or you think it will be an even match but both teams have a good chance of scoring then this is the right bet for you.
Goal bets: Amount of goals in a match
Another popular form of goal bet if you’re interested in betting on individual matches is to place a bet on the total amount of goals that you think will be scored in a match.
There are a number of ways in which you can place a bet on the amount of goals in a match:
- Total amount of goals scored by both teams in a match
- Total amount of goals scored by a single team in match
- Exact amount of goals scored in a match
- Exact amount of goals scored by a single team in a match
The most common way to bet on the amount of goals scored in a match is to bet on how many both teams will score in total.
Betting sites will offer over and under odds with a decimal point (.5) to ensure there is no confusion between the amount of goals scored and your actual bet.
Let's say you're watching Brazil vs. Venezuela in the group stage of the Copa America. You're pretty sure that Brazil will win the match as they're a much stronger team and the odds reflect that so they're quite low. You decide to place a bet on the amount of goals in a match.
The betting site offers odds like this:
- Under 0.5 goals
- Over 0.5 goals
- Under 1.5 goals
- Over 1.5 goals
- Under 2.5 goals
- Over 2.5 goals
Let's say you place a bet on the match ending with over 2.5 goals:
- Any result where at the final whistle there are over 2.5 goals will result in a winning bet
- Brazil 2-1 Venezuela = winning bet ✅
- Brazil 3-0 Venezuela = winning bet ✅
- Brazil 2-2 Venezuela = winning bet ✅
The same method applies if you were to bet on there being under a certain amount of goals in a match.
Amount of cards, corners and free kicks in a match
In the same way that it’s possible to place bets on the amount of goals in a match, you can also wager against how many cards, corners, free kicks or free kicks there will be. The same methodology applies as it does to the Copa America betting for goals which is explained above.
