Rivals ready to roll
Buckle yourselves in for the standout fixture of the Premier League calendar as Liverpool attempt to nudge themselves ahead in the title race at the home of their greatest rivals.
As big as it gets
Tell a lie, these old adversaries could both be fronting it out for the league but you know what I mean. There’s so much riding on 90 minutes of football it’s hard to know where to begin.
Are Liverpool really over their mini-wobble? Do three points guarantee Solskær the job full-time? Will United’s iffy defence stand tall vs. Salah and co.? So many questions to be answered…
Reds can make statement
However you view Liverpool’s start to 2019, The Reds, after dropping points in just three of their first 21 league games, have slowed up somewhat.
Compared to their last six featuring three wins, two draws and a defeat, you have to say the questions casting doubt on their true credentials are fair.
There’s pressure on Liverpool to seize back the initiative in the title race as well make a real statement. What better way to dispel the doubters than a win over your arch-rivals!
Ole almost there
There are murmurs Solskær has already done enough to warrant being given the job beyond the summer. Let’s face it, nobody would be surprised.
The transformation has been remarkable under the baby-faced assassin who has overseen 11 wins from his 13 games in charge and has made no secret of his desire to land his ‘dream job’.
Getting the better of Liverpool, something OGS was no stranger to during his playing days at United, is surely the final stage of his audition. Expect Old Trafford to be doubly motivated come Sunday.
Classic on the cards
Rarely does this game disappoint and the factors surrounding this particular clash points towards a classic, as does a trip down memory lane.
A Marcus Rashford double inspired the hosts to a 2-1 victory last season, while a late Zlatan leveller cancelled out James Milner’s in a typical rip-roaring encounter the year before.
Anthony Martial introduced himself to the Old Trafford faithful in perfect fashion during the 2015 encounter, scoring the third with a moment of brilliance to clinch the points and a comfortable 3-1 win for United.
Last three league encounters:
2017/18: Man United 2-1 Liverpool
2016/17: Man. United 1-1 Liverpool
2015/16: Man. United 3-1 Liverpool
Betting tip
These two don’t need motivation to beat one another but throw in the added incentives mentioned and we should be in for an absolute barnstormer of a Premier League game.
I’m torn which the way points will go but both teams to register is a solid call in my book.
