Fulham to get third successive win in London derby
Two of the early bright starters of the Championship face off in the first midweek round of fixtures with Neil Harris’ Millwall travelling to Craven Cottage for their first London derby of the season. Fulham condemned the first managerial casualty of the second tier at the weekend in confirming Jan Siewert’s fate by beating Huddersfield 2-1 at the John Smith Stadium thanks to a great strike from Wolves loanee Ivan Cavaleiro. The Lions remain unbeaten and are sitting pretty above the Cottagers in fifth place on the same points as table-toppers Leeds United, having won at home to previously first-placed Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.
Recent statistics
Fulham have scored exactly twice in their last two matches, growing into the transition back into the Championship nicely with back-to-back wins. Four of their last five competitive wins have been accompanied by a clean sheet. Millwall have won three and drawn one in all competitions so far with the best defensive record in the division, only conceding once. However, Fulham have been victorious in three of the last four head-to-head meetings, scoring six in the last two. Seven of the Cottagers’ last eight have seen only one side get on the scoresheet.
The best front three in the league
Fulham’s ridiculously gifted at this level attacking contingent started to gel in the match against Huddersfield with Cavaleiro and Anthony Knockaert combining throughout and the big Serbian, Aleksandar Mitrovic bagging his second goal in as many games. They will come up against a dogged Millwall side who will put their bodies on the line, but across the course of 90 minutes the quality will shine through for Scott Parker’s men. Despite having had a frustrating evening at the John Smith Stadium the Portuguese winger dug out an outstanding finish to win it as the match entered the final 10 minutes, a confidence player with pace to burn will cause all kinds of problems on Wednesday night. The depth that Fulham have at their disposal makes them more likely to cope better to playing three games in a week as Millwall will probably name the same back four and offensive players and system they have deployed in their opening three challenges.
Millwall are tactically very solid and will run themselves into the ground for the badge on Wednesday evening however the guile that comes from midfield and Championship promotion winning experience that Fulham have in bulk will see them through to victory and make it three in three as they kick on for a strong season.
