Werder must improve home form to survive
Two of recent weeks’ most improved sides go head-to-head at Weser Stadium on Wednesday evening. Werder Bremen host Eintracht Frankfurt with the opportunity to leapfrog Fortuna Dusseldorf into the relegation playoff spot presenting itself, making it a huge encounter for Florian Kohfeldt’s side. Eintracht have had a very disappointing season but boosted their bid to maintain topflight status with a 2-1 win over Wolfsburg on Saturday, they are seven points and five places Bremen’s superior. The visitors are narrow favourites however this is not an easy one to call, with a lot resting on it for Werder.
Recent form
The River Islanders have completed three consecutive clean sheets since their 4-1 drubbing at home to Bayer Leverkusen in the first round of fixtures since the resumption of play. It is the first time they have achieved that defensive consistency since 2013/14, posting those shutouts against Freiburg, Borussia Monchengladbach, and Schalke. One of their glaring pitfalls this term has been home form, they have only won once all season and have only scored one goal in the last seven in the Bundesliga at Weser Stadium. Frankfurt likewise are fragile, having responded to equalise after entering a losing position just once on the road in 2019/20.
Key men
Leonardo Bittencourt has been involved in every goal Bremen have scored since the pause in the season, assisting one and scoring two. Earning his side six crucial points, netting twice in 1-0 victories at Freiburg and Schalke. The most recent winner at the Veltins Arena was a beautiful curled strike from range with his weaker left foot, catching Alexander Nubel by surprise and soaring into the top corner. The versatile attacking midfielder is on loan from Hoffenheim, but Werder will be desperate for his signature, should he repeat his recent heroics and power Kohfeldt’s men to safety. His experience of a dog fight, where he was relegated with Koln in 2017/18 could be key in their endeavours.
With Frankfurt losing a lot of quality attacking players in recent years, with the likes of Luka Jovic, Sebastien Haller and Ante Rebic all moving on last summer, Daichi Kamada stayed put, he spent last season on loan in Belgium with Sint-Truiden. The Japan international has scored his first two Bundesliga goals of the campaign in the last two outings, adding to his impressive contributions in cup competitions, with his total productivity standing at: 10 goals and seven assists from 41 games. A brilliant shift in his first full season as a regular starter.
Werder will try to keep it tight and stop Frankfurt’s creativity, looking to take their chances when they do appear against a leaky backline, it could be a pivotal match in the relegation picture.
