Jubilant Valenica to throw everything at Real
Real Madrid’s tough week on the road continues Sunday evening at the Mestalla, where they will face the triumphant Champions League Group H winners Valencia, a team still off the pace domestically looking to build on their brilliant 1-0 win at the Amsterdam Arena on Tuesday. The Galacticos have been far superior in La Liga so far this term yet the momentum built in recent weeks by Albert Celades’ side could stand them in good stead to pull off a shock here. Valencia have won three of the last five times they have hosted Zinedine Zidane’s men.
Champions League heroics
It was a gargantuan performance to progress to the knockout stages in victory over the 2018/19 semi-finalists, with big game player Rodrigo stepping up to the plate once again with an emphatic finish on 24 minutes, assisted brilliantly by the outstanding emerging talent that is Ferran Torres.
Until Gabriel Paulista’s late red card, him and Mouctar Diakhaby were brilliant for the Mates who saw very little of the ball especially in the second half. Skillful attacker Hakim Ziyech was feeding off scraps in this game and the organisation that saw them battle on to get the three points will have been admired by every team in the competition.
Real Madrid
With El Clasico on the horizon and a day less to recover for this fixture than Celades’ men this will certainly be a test for the Galacticos off the back of a trip to Brugge on Wednesday evening. Their spot in second place in Group A is already confirmed however Zizou will be looking to finish strongly at this stage with Barcelona demonstrating exactly how to in their 2-1 win at the San Siro on Tuesday.
El Clasico next Wednesday feels like it will set up the rest of the season and so Real need to be at their best when they travel to Camp Nou, to which has not been happy visiting in recent years.
Ferran Torres
This is already the Spaniard’s top performing season in terms of goal involvement with seven in 19 games coming off the right flank. Only 19 and in the form of his career, he may be Valencia’s biggest creative threat on Sunday, having scored in each of his last two La Liga appearances as he continues to push for an international berth with Euro 2020 fast approaching.
Expect an enthralling encounter with both sides kicking on in all competitions towards the new year.
