City to reign supreme in the capital
The big Premier League kick-off is finally upon us and Nuno Espirito Santo’s opening encounter as Tottenham Hotspur manager could not be much harder. Pep Guardiola’s league champions have had mixed fortunes against Spurs in the past but will be intent on starting the season strongly, ensuring they do not have to play catch-up, as they did so effectively last term. It feels like a new era with Sergio Aguero not in their ranks but strong favourites they are nonetheless, I am using the bet365 Bet Builder to find value in this one.
Background
With big question marks still present over Spurs talisman Harry Kane’s future the expectations of the North Londoners’ season are still yet to be established. Key player Son Heung-Min signed a new deal this summer but is approaching 30, with it unclear if his devastating pace in behind will be as effective this time around. Santo was known for a defensive style of play last season which is not too dissimilar from what they experienced under Jose Mourinho last season, from Portuguese to Portuguese the bar looks relatively low for this term compared to ones gone by. The club have failed to find a sufficient replacement for Mauricio Pochettino and capitalise on the Champions League final appearance they achieved under his reign.
City should receive much fiercer competition from the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool for the title this season, their solidarity provided by the partnership of Ruben Dias and John Stones will not be enough on its own to take them comfortably to the crown. There are some selection dilemmas for Guardiola to consider, as ever with such a talented squad at his disposal, it looks likely that City will operate with a false nine for much of the campaign, Kevin De Bruyne is the most accomplished player in the role but it will be interesting to see if Ferran Torres or even Jack Grealish get a chance to adapt to the position.
Spurs will look to spoil and offer City no space in behind, despite being at home they would be content with a bore draw against the Premier League champions. Guardiola will have his sights set on the Champions League, the only competition he is yet to get his hands on in his time in England.
City are rightful favourites here and this familiar double is a sensible selection to start the season in good fashion.
