A low scoring game under lights at Bramall Lane
Two of the Premier League’s three northern United’s face off at Bramall Lane on Thursday evening with Steve Bruce’s Newcastle visiting for the first time since 2006/07 to which the Blades were relegated alongside Watfordand Charlton Athletic. Chris Wilder’s newly promoted Sheffield United have defied the odds to surge up the table and find themselves in seventh position, making them firm favourites to take all three points. They are yet to lose away from home this term, the same cannot be said for Newcastlewho will need to improve on the toothless display they put in against Aston Villa last time on their travels.
Recent form
The hosts are unbeaten in seven matches and have impressively only conceded a single first half goal at Bramall Lane this campaign. The Magpies have failed to score in three of their last four trips, though have been entertaining at home in between with three of their last four at all venues bringing more than 2.5 goals. Interestingly over 60% of the visitors’ goals have been scored by defenders with fleeting wide players DeAndre Yedlinand Jetro Willems have contributed of late. Both teams have scored in four of the visitors last five however the Blades‘ backline will make that difficult on Thursday.
Lys Mousset
A 23-year-old Frenchman who had a tough spell at AFC Bournemouth playing second fiddle to Josh King and Callum Wilson. Brought in during the same window as club record signing Ollie McBurnie could have led Moussetto see similar fortunes following his transfer of just under £10million but he has grabbed his opportunity with both hands. Registering five goals and three assists in the league so far this season has gone as far as equaling his tally for the Cherries to which took him 71 appearances to achieve.
Jonjo Shelvey
Talismanic skipper and former England international has found home at St. James’ after a turbulent early career moving from London to Liverpool to Wales and then finally to the Magpies for just under £15million. A right footed screamer of an equaliser against Manchester City at the weekend was the 27-year-old’s 11th goal for the club in 121 appearances. Taking up a somewhat deeper role in midfield this season as Bruce looks to harness his outstanding passing ability to the benefit of his team. His creativity from possession in front of the Sheffield United rearguard will be crucial to Newcastle taking anything from this game.
It will be a tight evening game with a fiery atmosphere and will see the Magpies struggle on the road once again with the Blades proving why they are firmly within England’s top ten teams.
