Dortmund give some wriggle room at Leipzig
RB Leipzig host Borussia Dortmund in a crunch encounter in the Bundesliga on Saturday evening. Jesse Marsch’s men have struggled a little at the start of the season but the club’s underlying process remains strong and they have commanded respect from the bookmakers to go in as favourites when they host Marco Rose’s Dortmund. Both clubs are in Champions League action on Wednesday evening ahead of this fixture with BVB having the kinder matchup. Leipzig welcome Paris Saint-Germain while the visitors play host to Erik Ten Hag’s impressive Ajax. The hosts need to make up for lost time domestically and are sat a little behind the eight ball in eighth position, however they are expected to recover and finish inside the top four once again.
Process
Leipzig’s expected goals (xG) data gives them a slight edge over Dortmund, ranking second in the division averaging 2.26 xGF per game. The visitors are just one spot behind in the underlying numbers however will likely be without talisman forward Erling Haaland for this fixture.
BVB do have decent depth in attacking areas and can cope with the Norwegian’s loss particularly against a brittle Leipzig defence.
Goals?
Given the strengths of the two sides a goals angle is appealing however without Haaland Rose may opt for a more defensive style. It will certainly be entertaining from a neutral perspective with both sides coming in off the back of a Champions League outing there could be further squad rotation. For those relative unknowns, a selection with some insurance that gives us more than one match outcome onside feels like a sensible punt.
- Leipzig have scored in all of their last 12.
- Leipzig have conceded in seven of ten.
- Leipzig have seen both teams score in seven of ten.
- Leipzig have seen over 2.5 goals in six of ten.
- Dortmund have scored in eight of ten.
- Dortmund have conceded in seven of ten.
- Dortmund have seen both teams score in five of ten.
- Dortmund have seen over 2.5 goals in six of ten.
Dortmund are competing much higher up in the table than Leipzig which gives them a little bit less pressure on their shoulders going into the matchup.
