Ibrox the stage for another European classic
Thursday night sees Giovanni van Bronckhorst's Rangers side attempt to overturn the 1-0 loss they suffered away in Germany against RB Leipzig. Angelino's late strike separated the two sides at the Red Bull Arena.
Gers looking to bring back the European glory days
1972 was the last time Rangers won a European trophy. They won the European Cup Winners' Cup after being losing finalists twice. They'll be determined to make it back to that stage once more on Thursday night.
Last three results:
Motherwell 1-3 Rangers (23.04.22)
RB Leipzig 1-0 Rangers (28.04.22)
Celtic 1-1 Rangers (01.05.22)
A late Fashion Sakala goal saved Rangers from losing to Celtic in three of their four league games this season. It leaves Rangers six points behind their city rivals in the SPFL, all but wrapping up the league title for Celtic.
However, with their focus very much on Europe, this isn't hugely surprising. Being one game away from a European final, Rangers will be looking to the likes of Ryan Kent to step up. After some of his blistering performances in Europe, he could be the difference maker.
Europe a welcome distraction from poor domestic action
Domenico Tedesco's side have looked dominant in the Europa League this campaign, but have a testing trip to Ibrox in order to advance to the final. However, their league form has seen them sit 5th in the Bundesliga, far from the high hopes set by their owners.
Last three results:
RB Leipzig 1-2 Union Berlin (24.04.22)
RB Leipzig 1-0 Rangers (28.04.22)
Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-1 RB Leipzig (02.05.22)
Coming off the back of a humbling 3-1 loss at the hands of Borussia Mönchengladbach, despite Gladbach being down to 10-men for much of the game, Leipzig will be eager to set the record straight.
The RB Leipzig star, Chrisopher Nkunku could be the key to unlock this Rangers backline. His creativity and scoring threat could cause the hosts issues come Thursday night.
The Verdict:
This one is simply too tricky to call either way. While Leipzig undoubtedly have the stronger squad, a mixture of their poor form as well as Rangers having the backing of their notorious home support could throw this tie either way.
