Go Ahead Eagles visit top of the tree PSV
PSV looking maintain top spot
Roger Schmidt's side ran out convincing 4-1 winners away at RKC Waalwijk on Sunday to maintain their one point lead at the top of the Eredivisie. They are just ahead of Ajax in second and Feyenoord in third. Their 4-1 victory on Sunday was a comprehensive one, with substitute Yorbe Vertessen scoring a brace. The young Belgian made an instant impact from the bench, and his two goals were added to by a Cody Gakpo penalty and a goal on the hour mark from right back Phillipp Mwene. This was PSV's fourth league win on the spin, and they're unbeaten in the Eredivisie since their humbling 5-0 defeat at the hands of Ajax in late October. This game is their last of 2021, and the new year sees them have a tricky run where they take on Ajax, AZ Alkmaar and Vitesse at the end of January. The reverse fixture between these two sides back in September was a very close one, where a late Marco van Ginkel striker sealed all three points for the visitors. Cody Gakpo once again scored on that day, opening the scoring before Inigo Cordoba equalised for Go Ahead Eagles. Roger Schmidt will be once again without Ryan Thomas, Mees Kreekels, Davy Propper, Shurandy Sambo and Eran Zahavi who all miss the game through injury as well as young Englishman Noni Madueke. PSV are likely to go with an attacking lineup to try and break down this defensively solid Go Ahead Eagles outfit.
Go Ahead scuppered by inconsistency
In their first season back in Holland's top flight, Go Ahead have given a very decent account of themselves. However, they suffered their third straight defeat on Sunday when they fell 2-0 to fellow promoted side NEC. Despite dominating possession, just two shots on target from a total of 14 efforts for Go Ahead meant that they wasted this dominance. Away from home, they have this impressive nack for frustrating their opponents. Holding Ajax to a 0-0 draw back in early November, as well as beating Vitesse on their own turf shows that on their day they can be a tough side to beat. With a trip to Heerenveen in the KNVB Cup in the new year on the horizon, Go Ahead will be determined to put their poor form behind them.
PSV are the obvious favourites here. But with Ajax applying pressure behind them in the table, there's a lot riding on this game. I can see Go Ahead frustrating their hosts and maybe even hold out for a point. That's why I'm going with Under 2.5 goals here with bet365.
