Free-scoring Dortmund go to Paris in last 8 bid
Paris Saint-Germain’s bid to finally make waves in the Champions League after years of flattering to deceive comes to a head on Wednesday evening when they host Borussia Dortmund in the second leg of their round of 16 tie. The German side ran out 2-1 victors at Signal Iduna Park on February 18 and will fancy their chances of holding onto their advantage. Lucien Favre’s men have risen to second place in the Bundesliga as of last weekend and will enjoy the underdog tag. PSG remain slight favourites to qualify despite the one goal disadvantage and have had three days longer to prepare having not played since March 4.
Domestic form
Both teams have won three out of three since the first leg however it is important to note Dortmund’s improved defensive form since the winter break. The older and young centre back pairing of Mats Hummels and Dan-Axel Zagadou is beginning to blossom as is BVB’s season, with them achieving three clean sheets in their last four Bundesliga outings, only conceding the one goal, from Lars Stindl in a 2-1 win on Saturday.
PSG have continued their leisurely parade to the Ligue 1 title, with a 4-3 win over Bordeaux, 4-0 demolition of Dijon who surprisingly beat them in the reverse fixture and an impressive 5-1 victory away to Lyon in the cup. The big positive for them in this streak has been the return to goalscoring form of Kylian Mbappe who will be crucial to the comeback attempt on Wednesday evening.
Ones to watch
Mbappe has scored six goals in his last three matches, ridiculous form. Sharing first place in the scoring charts with Monaco’s Wissam Ben Yedder with 18. The Parisians’ main man got the assist for Neymar’s equaliser in Dortmund, providing the only clear moment of attacking spark in the 90 minutes. With Euro 2020 on the horizon and potentially a lucrative transfer across Europe in his path, the 21-year-old will want to finish the season strongly.
Thorgan Hazard has performed admirably in recent weeks displacing the talents of BVB stalward Marco Reus and caught the eye with a beautiful curled shot giving the 2018/19 Bundesliga runners-up the lead against Borussia Monchengladbach last time out. In combination with Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland, they will be tough to handle.
This one could go goal crazy should Dortmund score away goals in leading to some gung-ho attacking football. Back a similar pattern to the first meeting.

A performance to forget for BVB in front of an empty Parc des Princes. PSG were comfortable 2-0 winners and progress.
