Peru to stand firm against hosts Brazil
The final round of group matches in Group A is upon us with all still to play for with Brazil, Peru and Venezuela all looking strong for qualification. The hosts were held to a goalless draw with Venezuela last time out having had some key injuries. Whereas Peru eased past Bolivia 3-1 in a potential banana skin setting up a massive game between these two CONMEBOL nations, though with the possibility of qualifying in third place it is likely both will progress.
Recent record
Peru won the most recent Copa America match between the two 1-0 in the 2016 tournament. As Peru topped the group with Brazil being knocked out. That scalp will give the Peruvians confidence of replicating it tonight against an out of sorts Brazil side with limited experience playing together especially in competitive football. The White and Red’s last five Copa America fixtures against other CONMEBOL nations inside Fifa’s top 20 have all been determined by one goal or less (1W, 2D, 2L). Brazil are unbeaten in their last 12 so will be confident of getting past Peru, but it will be tight. Four out of Peru’s last six have brought under 2.5 goals with both teams scoring on only one of those six occasions.
Peruvian flair
Cristian Cueva is a tricky attacking midfielder who could unlock the Brazilian defence and Andre Carrillo formerly of Watford and Sporting Lisbon has not played much in the tournament so could come in to stretch the backline, in asking some questions of the ageing Thiago Silva who is surely playing in his last tournament for Brazil. Though they have had to rely on the old heads of Paolo Guerrero and Jefferson Farfan of late, both getting on the scoresheet in the win over Bolivia. With them looking good for qualification, Ricardo Gareca could rotate in the final round of group fixtures, should he give Carrillo a chance I would expect the skillful winger to give a good account of himself in the hope of being selected in the later rounds.
Lack of togetherness
It is not a familiar looking Brazil side at the moment, no Marcelo, no Neymar and with the pressure of playing at home the lack of experience will show. Some players may not give their all in this encounter with an eye on the next round with a lot again on the shoulders of Philippe Coutinho who is coming off the back of a poor season at Barcelona and Roberto Firmino. Forced back in having only recently recovered from injury.
Peru will put in an impressive display and draw or beat Brazil in a slow pace match with both teams having an eye on the knockout stages.
