Flick to prevail in potential thriller
The champions of France and Germany go head-to-head for the biggest prize in club football in the Champions League final. After overcoming RB Leipzig and Lyon by three goals to nil in the semi-final, German managers Thomas Tuchel and Hansi Flick will fancy their chances. The Bavarians have consistently played an alarmingly high line defensively in the competition, aiding their high pressing tactics in offensive areas, but presenting an opportunity to the opposition. Memphis Depay and Karl Toko Ekambi both spurred golden opportunities in the semi-final, latching onto through balls that had capitalised on that tactic. Bayern Munich are odds on the win the match and be crowned kings of Europe for the first time since 2013.
Background
PSG have scored in the half an hour in six of their last eight and Bayern’s first halves in the competition have been goal heavy. A both teams to score punt is shortening but looks nailed on. Flick’s men are unbeaten in their last 29 matches winning 28, performing astonishingly in front of goal in that time. They have averaged 3.34 per game in the unbeaten run and have slammed home 4.2 goals per outing in the Champions League, the highest in the competition’s history, the previous record is held by PSG in 2017/18. Leading marksman Robert Lewandowski has netted in nine consecutive Champions League fixtures not as consistent as the opponents though who have bagged in 34 European matches in a row.
Ones to watch
Marquinhos the Brazilian centre back converted to a defensive midfielder has scored the team’s first goal in the last two matches. A vital injury time equaliser in the quarterfinal against Atalanta and then continuing the momentum, nodding in from a set piece to get the ball rolling against Julian Nagelsmann’s Leipzig.
The 26-year-old’s teammate Kylian Mbappe backed his outstanding substitute cameo against Atalanta by leading the line as central striker brilliantly in the semi. The man many are talking about to get in behind the Bayern backline and potentially challenge Alphonso Davies in a foot race, will be raring to go with this title being the one the Parisians have been gunning towards for years.
Then comes one of the emerging world class talents of this season in Serge Gnabry. The German former West Bromwich Albion benchwarmer will be hungry for his first European crown after stealing the show in the semi-final. The former Arsenal man turned on the afterburners to combat some early Lyon pressure by smashing a shot in the upper echelons with his weaker left peg after an awesome solo run coming in from the right flank. Do not be surprised if he steals the show once again.
Goals wise this is set to be one of the best Champions League finals in years, but the occasion may dampen both sides’ attacking output.
