Van Gaal's Holland march on
Montenegro all but out of the running
Sitting in 4th place of Group G of the European World Cup Qualifiers, Montenegro are, for all intents and purposes, not going to be at Qatar 2022. The Balkan nation have three wins, two draws and three losses from their eight games, and sit six points behind Norway in 2nd spot with two games still to play. Barring Norway losing both of their final two games and Montenegro miraculously winning against both the Netherlands and Turkey, it looks to be another year where Montenegro fall short of qualification to the World Cup finals. With Norway playing in the early kick-off on Saturday against second bottom side Latvia, it's likely that Montenegro will mathematically have had their fate decided by this point. The hosts lost 4-0 in the reverse fixture back in September in Eindhoven, not really putting up much of a fight against Louis Van Gaal's side. The real nail in the coffin for Montenegro was their 2-0 loss away at Norway, the side they had a slim chance of catching for qualification. But a Mohamed Elyounoussi double put rest to that.
Holland flying to the finals
The Netherlands, on the other hand, top this group with 19 points. Six wins, one draw and a 4-2 loss to Turkey on matchday one back in March, means that a win in Montenegro would seal their qualification and ensure that they have the best chance top the group no matter what Norway do come Saturday. The Netherland's have won four consecutive qualifying games, with victories over Montenegro, Turkey, Latvia and Gibraltar. They face Norway in a table-topping decider on Tuesday, so this game against Montenegro is crucial to put them in position to finish first. Conceding just six goals in their eight games so far, the Netherlands have been in cruise control against the large majority of this group. Their 4-0 win against Montenegro was thanks to goals from Giorginio Wijnaldum, Cody Gakpo and a Memphis Depay brace, keeping up the Barcelona frontman's excellent record for Oranje. They'll likely have Memphis leading the line, along with in form Arnaut Danjuma and Noa Lang providing the flair in attack with Memphis. Montenegro will struggle to find a way past a potential back four of Denzel Dumfries, Stefan De Vrij, Virgil Van Dijk and Daley Blind come Saturday. Van Gaal's side are on red hot form, and they should breeze past a weak Montenegro side come Saturday.
Holland are back to being a European powerhouse under Van Gaal, and will continue their impressive performances on Saturday night in Montenegro. That's why I'm going with the Netherlands to win and Both Teams to Score: No with bet365.
