Reds will run rampant
A European football chasing showdown takes centre stage on Wednesday evening with Manchester United welcoming the visit of Sheffield United. Chris Wilder’s Blades will once again be looking to upset the apple cart in the race as they have done all season long, the reverse fixture between these two lives long in the memory, Sheff U led 2-0 commandingly before the Red Devils scored three times in just seven minutes to turn the match on its head, with the goalscorers having all come through the clubs youth system in the form of Brandon Williams, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford. This was only for Ollie McBurnie to earn a point in the 90th minute, definitely one of the standout encounters of the 2019/20 Premier League season.
Background
Only one of the hosts’ last eight fixtures have brought over 2.5 goals and both teams have found the net in just two of the last 11. Despite sitting seventh in the table the Blades have the sixth least potent attacking contingent, and are yet to score since the resumption of play, despite having the ball obviously cross the line against Aston Villa last Wednesday, do not get me started on that whole basket-case.
The Mancunians have kept six clean sheets in their last seven matches at Old Trafford, although the opener they conceded at Tottenham Hotspur on Friday made Harry Maguire and David de Gea look extremely rusty. They only concede 0.8 goals per home league game and with just seven of the Blades’ league games seeing over 2.5 scored, a low scoring affair is on the cards. Wednesday’s visitors have only managed to net over 1.5 goals in one of their last 13 Premier League outings, not setting this one up to be a thriller. When they do alternatively boast the division’s second-best defensive record.
Last time out
After a John Egan red card Sheffield United slumped to a 3-0 loss at St. James’ Park on Sunday, the Irishman has been colossal in their rearguard success this term, and will be a big miss on Wednesday. Egan’s exclusion will be more impactful should Jack O’Connell not pass fit for the game, the 26-year-old has not played any part since the resumption of play and is a doubt for the trip to the Theatre of Dreams.
The Red Devils were much the better team in their 1-1 draw in North London, an eye-catching Paul Pogba cameo brought the equaliser from 12 yards off the boot of Bruno Fernandes. With COVID-19 making Pogba remaining at the club more likely, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be keen to get him involved from the start as soon as possible.
The hosts look in better shape than the Blades who love to spring a surprise, I cannot see it happening in this one though.
