Lyon to melt under Bayern's dominant glare
Lyon fly the flag of underdogs everywhere as they prepare to take on the might of Bayern Munich in their Champions League semi-final tie. Is there any hope of an upset? Have a read of our preview here:
Relative minnows in a pond full of sharks
Lyon’s win against Manchester City was a brilliant result for the club and considering they haven’t played football since the lockdown it was all the more impressive.
From the moment Maxwel Cornet curled the French side in front, you sensed they had enough energy and quality to see off Pep’s men and it proved to be the case.
The drive they showed going forward was very impressive and with Memphis Depay back alongside Moussa Dembele, the threat they carry is clear for all to see.
They did, as most will acknowledge, get a massive slice of luck with the offside decision and the Ederson mistake, but in this elite competition, you make your own luck.
Now they face the side everyone will be expecting to win the Champions League crown following their demolition of Barcelona.
If Lyon are to stand a chance, they must work out how to get passed the press and get players behind Bayern’s vulnerable backline – easier said than done.
Bayern have nothing to fear
Bayern ensured that the Champions League semi-finals will take place without Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi for the first time in 15 years.
The German champions smashed Barce 8-2 in the most remarkable game of 2019/20. It was simply astonishing to see a once-great side fall apart so spectacularly.
This result, and the way they play in general, has made Hans-Dieter Flick’s side the favourites to walk away with the sixth European Cup trophy in the club’s history.
It really is a formidable side they now have at their disposal. Thomas Muller and Robert Lewandowski are obvious stars but they now have a new generation of talent that will see them into the next decade.
Alphonso Davies showed with his 19-touch assist, just what a special player he is, but Bayern can also call upon Leroy Sane and Serge Gnabry in a squad overloaded with game changing quality.
They should breeze into the final, but City probably said something similar just before they face Lyon.
