Two champions do battle as Liverpool host Leeds
Liverpool vs Leeds is a great way for the champions to kick off 2020/21 in the Premier League. Can these two great clubs put on a show? Have a read of our preview here:
The title defence starts here
Jurgen Klopp delivered on his promise last season when he ended Liverpool’s wait for a Premier League title.
It would have been nice to do it in front of a packed Anfield, but even though that was denied them, they can still revel in a much-deserved crown.
Defending that title will be a different matter. They prepare for the new season with a similar squad, although that is no bad thing, and know that Manchester City and Manchester United are both hoping to push them harder this year.
With Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson in their prime, the Reds should be able to maintain the same rocket-powered football.
In attack Roberto Firmino, Mo Salah and Sadio Mane remain while Jordan Henderson will dictate play from midfield knowing Virgil van Dijk is there should he need him.
It’s a great squad and an intriguing test to start the new campaign. Let’s hope it lives up to billing.
16 years of hurt never stopped them dreaming
Leeds finally made it back to the top flight after 16 years mucking with the provincials. Marcelo Bielsa is, frankly, a genius and could probably achieve the impossible, like getting Celtic to a Champions League group stage.
He will be delighted to have been the man to bring Premier League football back to the Elland Road faithful and also develop some of his squad into serious international contenders.
Kalvin Phillips may well be an England mainstay over the next few years and he could be the first of many to benefit from Bielsa’s methods in this way.
In truth, they couldn’t ask for a tougher start but on the flip side, there will be no pressure. It’s time to just sit back and enjoy the show.
