Rotation to work positively for England
Kosovan hearts were broken on Thursday night as defeat to Czech Republic, despite taking the lead, meant their Euro 2020 qualification dream was over. It has been a massively impressive campaign from Bernard Challandes’ men amidst Thursday’s disappointment, but a 2-1 loss to the Czechs being so gutting just demonstrates how far the nation have come on the pitch since their first competitive international in September 2016. Dardanians came out of the reverse fixture with some new fans and a lot of credit for the courage they showed, effectively winning the second half 2-0 in a 5-3 defeat at St. Mary’s on the English south coast.
Squad rotation from the visitors
This one is a particularly interesting dead rubber in a round of dead rubbers, with Kosovohosting the Three Lions for the first time in their embryonic history and a chance to shine for many of the players trying to force their way into the national team.
The trio of Tammy Abraham, James Maddison and Callum Hudson-Odoi spring to mind as X factor talent that have earnt their opportunity to show Gareth Southgate what they can do. Qualification top scorer Harry Kane may step aside in this instance. Following the melee with Joe Gomez I would also expect Raheem Sterling to be play some part on Sunday afternoon.
These attacking players having a point to prove could work in England’s favour by making this match more competitive and an opportunity to perform on the international stage, rather than portraying a game where both teams have nothing to play for. The Kosovans should get themselves up for the challenge of Englandto end an outstanding campaign that has seen them rise to 114 in the Fifa rankings in a positive manner.
Key men for the hosts
All-time top scorer and Fenerbahce stalward Vedat Muriqi missed the Czech Republic match due to injury, so Sheffield Wednesday forward Atdhe Nuhiu led the line in his absence and netted the opener. However, the two quality talents in the Kosovo squad are Lazio’s Valon Berishaand Swansea City’s Bersant Celina.
The former has been a bit part player at the Stadio Olimpico so far this season, with the Rome-based side sitting third in Serie A after 12 games, he also netted a brace in the reverse fixture, calling England’s bluff twice in quick succession in the second half. Celina is yet to produce his best form this season with the Swans, but his ability is clear for all to see and he has the potential for sure to cause the England backline problems all afternoon.
The Kosovans will be fired up for this one and they will be greeted by a strong atmosphere from the home faithful, however England’s quality will shine through and match them in what could be another goal fest.
