Coventry to march on at St. Andrews
High flying Coventry City welcome newly promoted strugglers Tranmere Roversto St. Andrews for a 12pm kick off on Sunday with the hosts looking to make their 4-0 loss to Rotherham last Saturday a distant memory. The Sky Blueshave stuttered a little but overall enjoyed an excellent start to the season sitting comfortably amongst the playoff places in fifth, the same cannot be said however for Micky Mellon’s Tranmere who are still trying to adapt to life in League One following their dramatic playoff final win deep into extra time. Currently in 20th place having lost two in a row; they are in a need of a positive result in this one.
Mark Robins’ incredible job
It cannot be understated the outstanding work Mark Robins is doing with the Sky Blues having inherited a rightfully disgruntled fan base and squad in League Two to knocking on the door of the Championship since taking over in 2017. Under extremely difficult circumstances playing at St. Andrews this season, the home of Birmingham City, having been removed from the Ricoh Arena following incompetence from owners Sisu Capital Ltd. Some shrewd summer signings have seen Coventry mount a serious promotion push and galvanise a sense of hope and optimism around the club.
Ones to Watch
Matthew Godden joined the Sky Blues from Peterborough United in the recent transfer window and has hit the ground running, however he has drawn a blank in his last four appearances and therefore I feel is due a strike on Sunday in front of the home crowd who make the lonely journey from their homes to Birmingham. The former Exeter City striker’s last goal was at St. Andrews in a cracking comeback as Covscored a stoppage time winner to complete a 3-2 win over Blackpool who had led by two goals in the first half.
Jordy Hiwula has also contributed in an attacking sense for the Sky Blues with four goals and two assists in 2018/19, the tricky forward can play on either wing and though still only 25 is an experienced campaigner at League One level. Combined with Goddenthe Tranmere defence will have their work cut out.
As for Rovers, summer addition Stefan Payne from Bristol Rovers has made the centre forward position his own with four goals and an assist in just nine appearances so far. A cultured finisher, Payne will however need the help of his supporting cast if he is to make an impact on Sunday and 27-year-old versatile midfielder Ollie Banks will need to be at his best.
Unlike some of his teammates Banks has a lot of League One experience playing all across the midfield and with three goals and an assist already in a struggling side, he will be a danger for the Sky Blues to contend with.
Coventry may be cautious following their 4-0 battering but will find a way to win in a potentially low scoring affair. Tranmere will be tight at the back and set up for a point, though the pressure will prove too much over the course of 90 minutes.

A superb late Corey Blackett-Taylor strike got Rovers a much needed 1-0 win with Coventry slipping out of the playoff places as a result. The Sky Blues were unlucky not to be awarded two penalties and Matthew Godden had his fair share of chances on a very frustrating afternoon.
