Can Burnley kick on from Chelsea draw?
The international break is almost completed and Burnley host Crystal Palace on Saturday looking to continue their good form in the Premier League. The Clarets picked up four points from their last two games before the break, beating Brentford handsomely at home before a hard earned point at Chelsea. Sean Dyche continues to work wonders with one of the smaller budgets in the English top-flight and will be confident of extending their unbeaten run to three games when the Eagles arrive at Turf Moor. It will be an interesting clash of styles with Patrick Vieira completely innovating Palace’s style of play from the era of Roy Hodgson.
Background
As much as it pains me to say it, due to my personal allegiances, Crystal Palace had an outstanding summer transfer window. The additions of Michael Olise, Odsonne Edouard, Conor Gallagher, Marc Guehi and Joachim Andersen were sublime pieces of business that have given the South Londoners a great chance of pushing on to a top half finish this season.
Eberechi Eze will be back on the scene after a serious injury soon and the reliance on Wilfried Zaha appears to be smaller than ever at Selhurst Park.
Process
Remarkably, Palace have the second best expected goals (xG) against figures in the league, narrowly better than Chelsea and only bettered by Manchester City. Allowing just 13.0 xGA on their own goal in 11 matches at an average of 1.18 xGA per game. Burnley are more known for being defensively solid but have not achieved that in the opening stretch of this season.
The Clarets rank 18th for xGA conceding 1.78 per game. Going forward they have been much improved which will come as a surprise, underperforming to score just 11 from 14.5 xGF ranking them 13th in the division.
