Dortmund to finish the season ominously strongly
The final game of the 2020/2021 Bundesliga season takes place on Saturday afternoon. Borussia Dortmund have won their last six league games in a row, and have ensured qualification for next term's UEFA Champions League in the process, something that at one juncture seemed next to impossible. They're not assured of third spot with Wolfsburg on the same number of points though, and will be looking to finish the campaign as strongly as possible. Bayer Leverkusen, in sixth, have secured Europa League football, and both sides will have new head coaches when it all kicks off again. Read our preview here:
Dirty Sancho
One of the chief components of their return to prominence has been England international Jadon Sancho. The forward had a tricky and surprisingly unproductive start to the campaign, but just when BVB needed him most, he has come up with the goods in spades, and has again reached double figures for both goals and assists. Doubtlessly, both he and Erling Braut Haaland will be subject to endless transfer speculation over the summer, although that qualification for the Champions League will have strengthened the board's hand. Elsewhere, Marco Reus and midfielder Jude Bellingham are also finishing well, although the latter has picked up a spate of yellow and red cards in recent weeks. The front four could run riot against a decidedly weak looking backline for the visitors.
For better or Wirtz
Though the season as a whole has erred on the disappointing side, one element that definitely hasn't is Florian Wirtz. The youngster, who only turned 18 this month, has impressed all year long from the heart of midfield. Unhelpful comparisons have been made to Kai Havertz, but the overarching theme is another big success story from the youth academy. He signed a long-term contract until 2026 in an attempt to drive up his asking price; the nature of every club not called Bayern Munich in Germany is to be a selling one, and it's only going to be a matter of time until Wirtz becomes another statistic in that regard. Leverkusen have no fewer than 12 players out of Saturday's game, but can look forward to a new regime next season under the auspices of Gerardo Seoane.
Borussia them aside
The combination of scintillating form and a depleted opposition could mean a big victory is on the cards for Dortmund. bet365 have odds of 2.75 for over 4.5 goals at Signal Iduna Park.
