Villarreal disrespected at the Allianz Arena
Villarreal travel to the Allianz Arena with a 1-0 lead from the first leg of their Champions League quarter final tie against Bayern Munich.
The Bavarians are understandably huge favourites given the talent in their squad and recent history in the competition, however Unai Emery and his Yellow Submarine will have a lot to say about that on Tuesday evening.
Arnaut Danjuma has adapted excellently to top-flight football after making the switch from Bournemouth in the summer, and will certainly be a threat on the counter attack.
Julian Nagelsmann’s credentials will be judged very negatively if they are unable to come through this tie and they will still be confident, but will have to earn their rack of lamb to make the final four.
Background
Emery rotated his team for their 1-1 draw at home to Athletic Bilbao at the weekend, while Bayern did what they had to do in a 1-0 over Augsburg.
Villarreal look unlikely to seal European qualification domestically and can throw caution to the wind in this encounter, Emery has done a tremendous job to lead them to Europa League glory and then through a tricky group and into the knockout stages, a lot of Arsenal supporters will be eating humble pie wishing they were the side in the last eight of the Champions League.
Raul Albiol, even at 36, remains a huge player for Villarreal, and has enjoyed a very successful spell back in Spain after leaving Napoli in 2019.
Albiol and Pau Torres will need to perform to their maximum level to keep Bayern out for large periods in what will be a cauldron atmosphere, but Villarreal have defied the odds before and the market probably is not showing them enough respect.
Goals?
I am happy to take an unders play, the goal line is very high, and if Villarreal can survive an early onslaught, it will be interesting to see Bayern’s resolve.
Bayern have scored in nine of ten.
Bayern have conceded in seven of ten.
Bayern have seen both teams score in six of ten.
Bayern have seen over 2.5 goals in four of ten.
Villarreal have scored in seven of ten.
Villarreal have conceded in seven of ten.
Villarreal have seen both teams score in four of ten.
Villarreal have seen over 2.5 goals in three of ten.
Bayern could well take an aggregate lead in the first half, but I am happy to side with Villarreal’s stubborn resistance.
