Making statements in Madrid
Liverpool head to Madrid on Tuesday looking to continue their superb season. Can they keep their hopes of another Champions League crown alive against Atletico? Have a read of our preview here:
Lacking the killer instinct
There is no denying that the loss of Antoine Griezmann made things a lot hard for Atleti, but they are still a formidable opponent for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Players like Alvaro Morata have tried to fill the void, with the former Chelsea man netting seven goals in La Liga while Angel Correa has been the creative spark with five assists and four strikes to his name.
Only Real Valladolid have drawn more games than Atletico Madrid in La Liga this season, which highlights their lack of cutting edge.
Saul Niguez has been a key man for the club in midfield but there is not a huge amount to get excited about at the Wanda Metropolitano this season.
The Champions League is their last hope of success and so Liverpool will have to be at their ruthless best, but they have been all season, so it could be a tough game for the Spaniards.
Liverpool fighting on all fronts
Liverpool will make history this season when they win the Premier League, but the Champions League is like their own competition. This is a competition they have won even when their performances in the league are nowhere near what they have been this season.
It is like being able to cook the perfect lobster stew without being able to put fish fingers in the oven without them coming out burnt to a cinder. The Reds are, however, changing that and you feel the Premier League/Champions League double is certainly not beyond them this season.
They won’t want to admit it, but the English top-flight is in the bag so concentrating on beating Atletico should take priority over the games against Watford and West Ham, both of which Liverpool are more than capable of winning without a couple of their top players.
Atletico haven’t any real title hopes remaining so they will be up for this and it could take Liverpool a big effort to return to Anfield with a decent result.
Atletico Madrid vs Liverpool betting tip
Atleti have not been able to find the winning formula enough to challenge the top sides in La Liga this season, but they can’t be taken lightly. That said, Liverpool are the best team in the world right now so we are backing them to win at odds of 23/20 with bet365.
