Atlanta to make or break Lazio in Serie A thriller
Lazio still have dreams of securing their first title since the year 2000 but face a quality opponent in the form of Atalanta. Can Simeone Inzaghi’s men replicate the glory of the Sven-Goran Eriksson era? Have a read of our preview here:
The divine trio
There were strong objection to the Serie A campaign continuing from some sections of the Atalanta Tifosi. Bergamo was hit hard by the global pandemic and feeling about football’s return are running high.
On the pitch, Gian Piero Gasperini has made the team on of the most entertaining in all of Europe which has seen them reach lofty heights over the last few years including some dominating performances in the Champions League.
The slick, fast-paced attacking football rolled out by Gasperini has been a delight to watch for supports of La Dea and neutrals alike.
They sit right in contention for another tilt at Champions League football again and much of that is down to the divine trinity of Josip Ilicic, Duvan Zapata and Alejandro Gomez.
Between them they have been responsible for terrorising many defenders across Serie A, to the point where they should team up with a counselling service in order to help their opponents recover.
Just before the lockdown, they trashed Lecce 7-2 on the road in a performance that made the long trip south more than worth it for those fans that made the trip.
Ilicic, in particular, has been outrageously good. 15 goals and five assists in the league don’t tell the whole story. This is a player with the Midas touch and more.
He has been ably assisted by powerful striker Duvan Zapata, who has netted 11 times while also notching five assists while Gomez has 10 assists and six goals.
This is probably the most exciting forward line Atalanta have ever had and they could be kingmakers or breakers on Wednesday.
Is this Lazio’s time?
It does seem like a dream for Lazio fans right now. The problem is, there is this rising feeling that they may wake up at any moment.
Keeping pace with Juve has been a shock in itself but the way Lazio have gone about their business has turned heads across Europe.
Ciro Immobile has scored an incredible 27 goals in just 25 starts, making him the key to any success Lazio might enjoy this season. If he is fit and firing then Inzaghi’s men always have a chance.
With supporting players like Luis Alberto (12 assists) and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic (four goals and four assists), you can finally expect Lazio to create opportunities and not just hope they do as once was the case.
Are they equipped to go all the way? In truth, a lot will depend on the form of Juventus who still have a better squad overall, but the Biancocelesti can dream, can’t they?
