Torino's fierce attack to push Wolves all the way
Molineux plays host for Torino in the second leg of the final round of Europa League qualification. Nuno Espirito Santo’s men are 3-2 up on aggregate and have a golden opportunity to clinch the clubs first spot in European competition since 1981. It has been a slow start to the season for the 2018/19 seventh placed side however with some rotations they should be able to fight on both fronts with the wealth of European talent in all areas of their squad.
Early season form
The Maroons travel to the Midlands after kicking off their Serie A campaign with a 2-1 win at home to Sassuolo on Sunday. Goals from familiar hitmen Simone Zaza and Andrea Belotti, saw Walter Mazzarri’s side go two goals in front before former Empoli striker, Francesco Caputo scored late on to create a nervy finish. Though having said that, they did not have it all their own way and won due to how clinical they were in front of goal, scoring with their only shots on target, with the visitors finding the net with one of their eight shots between the sticks. To get to this stage the Maroons won convincingly 7-1 and 6-1 on aggregate against Debrecen and Soligorsk respectively.
Two goals scored and two goals conceded in the opening three for Wanderers has them 15thin the table. So, the first leg score line sticks out like a saw thumb in that regard, however they were unlucky not to pinch a 1-0 win on the opening weekend with Leandro Dendoncker’s strike getting ruled out by VAR. Romain Saiss stepped into midfield in the first leg in his only start since the Premier League beginning, I would expect him to come back in as both sides will play 3-5-2.
First leg
An unusually high-scoring first leg ensued in Turin which may lead to a cagier affair on Thursday evening, though it seems Torino’s strength lies in offensive areas and that should force Wolves to attack, it could be another thriller. Wolves found the net with all of their shots on target in the 3-2 win with the Maroons creating 15 goal attempts and dominating territorially. Andrea Belotti’s 89th minute penalty gives Torino a lifeline as we approach this fixture, however Wolves have not lost at home in 2019, adding to the challenge.
Expect a resolute defensive display from the hosts, however the Italians will get on the scoresheet to make the tie a whole lot more interesting. There will be nervy closing stages, but I think Wolves will get over the line.
