Wales to qualify on a memorable night in Cardiff
After seven group matches for both teams, it all comes down to this. Ryan Giggs’ Walestake on Hungary at the Cardiff City Stadium with a win guaranteeing them qualification for Euro 2020, and a chance to back up their incredible run to the semi-final in 2016. The Hungarians’ form has slowed up of late and they are now just one point above the Dragons in second, needing a win to confirm qualification, though a draw could be enough dependent on the score line between Slovakia and Azerbaijan.
Recent form
Wales have managed to gather some momentum in their Group E campaign following a rocky start including a 1-0 defeat to Hungaryin June. They have been grinding out victories consistently, with four of their last five wins being by a one goals margin, solidity has been crucial to that form also with four out of five of their triumphs being accompanied by a shutout. The third-placed nation have only conceded more than one goal in a match on two of their last 12 outings, Tom Lockyer and Chris Mepham will look to pick up where they left off against Azerbaijan on Tuesday evening.
Hungary’s deterioration has seen them lose four of their last five encounters and led to them letting in two goals inside the first half an hour in two of their last three internationals. They have been blunted since their victory over the Welsh in June, only managing four goals in the five matches that has followed. Adding to the likelihood of this being a low scoring affair, as Wales’ last three matches on the trot have brought exactly three goals.
Key men
I get the sense that most of the game and what it mainly hinges on is how Magyars cope with Gareth Bale and what their strategy is to handle him, though having said that Wales have more than competent players in attacking areas in the likes of Daniel James and Harry Wilson should they put too much stress on taking out the Real Madrid winger. Kieffer Moore is a handful up top as well and will win aerial battles all night should he be given space, but Bale is the main man and skipper, nonetheless. He is his country’s top scorer ever and will relish the chance to galvanise a nation at another major tournament.
Wales will have learnt their mistakes from coming so close to qualifying for the World Cup playoffs in their last campaign and will get the job done on Tuesday evening comfortably.
