Bayern tighten their grip on title
League-leaders Bayern Munich return to action on Sunday when they take on Union Berlin in the capital. They will be expecting to make a final push to seal the title, but will it start this weekend? Have a read of our preview here:
Union Berlin will be delighted with campaign
Being promoted via the play-offs is problematic for sides going into very tough divisions the next season as it leaves them little time to plan and build over the summer.
That said, Union Berlin will be delighted with how they have coped with the step up since returning to the Bundesliga last season via a play-off promotion.
The start of the campaign suggested they would struggle but a run of four wins in five games during November and early December showed they were growing into their new surroundings.
They sit eight points clear of any relegation worries as things stand and they have several players who are obviously good enough to cut it amongst the best sides in the nation.
Sebastian Andersson has netted 11 times already, scoring almost a goal every two games while right midfielder Chris Trimmel has seven assists on the season.
These two are also backed up by some excellent performances by veteran defenders Christopher Lenz and Christian Genter.
Overall, Urs Fischer will be delighted with the campaign his side have enjoyed so far and they can look forward to another season in the top flight next season.
Bayern bounding to title
Every time Bayern Munich lose a game there is talk of a crisis at the club or if a senior player is benched for one match, headlines appear the next day reporting his imminent move to Manchester United.
This apparent drama may give people a welcome distraction, but that’s all it is. Bayern Munich are a goliath who dominate German football in the way Manchester United did in England during the 1990s and beyond.
They will be expecting to take the title this season, currently protecting and hoping to extend their four-point advantage over Borussia Dortmund.
Hans-Dieter Flick has proven to be the steady hands needed to get the club back on track after Nico Kovac’s departure and his new contract until 2023 certainly suggests the hierarchy at the club back him.
Robert Lewandowski has been the star yet again for the Bavarians. His incredible 25 goals in 23 league appearances has helped shoot the team up the table. Thomas Muller has 16 assists while Serge Gnabry and Philippe Coutinho have both contributed to an improved attacking output.
They will be expected to win on Sunday but whether it will be easy or not remains to be seen.
