Spurs to bring their A game against German giants
After a disappointing opening group stage outing, Tottenham Hotspur welcome German giants Bayern Munich to North London for an important match in vying for a comfortable progression out of Group B.
The table toppers of the Bundesliga will come up against a Spurs side who have had a relatively slow start in the Premier League currently residing in fifth after three wins, two draws and two losses to begin their campaign. However, Mauricio Pochettino’s side shocked most with their run to the final last season and therefore will be confident of bringing their A game to take this encounter to a Bayern Munich who seem too often have easy pickings domestically.
Recent form
Spurs were painfully pegged back from two goals up at Olympiakos on Matchday 1, bringing over 2.5 goals for the eighth time in their last ten group stage fixtures. They have a strong recent record against Pot 1 sides on home soil, winning three of their last four. Intriguingly all three of those victories included both teams scoring and over 3.5 match goals. Niko Kovac’s Bayern are impressively unbeaten in nine Champions League away games, including a trip to eventual competition winners Liverpool in the round of 16 last term. The gaffer is yet to claim a 100% win over the Bavarians fans and a heavy defeat here could put his position under threat.
Tactics
Thankfully for Spurs Serge Aurier's sending off at the weekend only applies for a Premier League suspension therefore they are likely to stick to their 4-2-3-1 formation however Pochettino likes to shock the big teams in European competition so it would not be a massive surprise for him to revert to a three at the back shape. They have no new injury concerns but lack a bit of depth, a straight swap with Lucas Moura or Erik Lamela coming in would be the most likely change.
The visitors too have been setting up in a 4-2-3-1 with defence arguably being their weakest facet. New French full backs Lucas Hernandez and Benjamin Pavard will get forward leaving Niklas Sule and Jerome Boateng in the centre. The latter being a Bayern stalward who has undoubtedly seen his best years come and go.
Following the poor result in Greece last time out Spurs will feel they need to take at least a point from this game and will call on memories like their 3-1 win over Real Madrid at the same stage two years ago to try and ignite their season and European campaign. The recent form suggests both sides will have enough attacking prowess to breach their opposing backlines on Tuesday so that may well be a profitable market.
Spurs will produce one of their best performances of the season so far against a Bayern Munich who are yet to be extensively tested in all competitions.
