Toronto to challenge the third-placed Red Bulls
Two sides battling it out inside the playoff places of the Eastern Conference face off at the most high-scoring ground in MLS this season, with Toronto coming off the back of a comfortable win over Canadian rivals Montreal Impact. New York Red Bulls travel across the border full of confidence having had success over Toronto in recent meetings, as the 2017 MLS Cup winners look to build momentum in approaching the business end of the season. This is an important match for both with the pressure inside the playoffs heating up, moving into the second half of the campaign.
Recent form
There has not been a draw in the last five head-to-head encounters and BMO Field is averaging 3.8 goals per game this season. Five points separates these franchises with the hosts in seventh and the Red Bulls sitting pretty in third. Toronto’s win on Sunday pushed them into the top seven and suggests that they are starting to peak at the right time to face a tough opponent on Thursday. The Red Bulls have won the last three fixtures with Toronto without conceding, including two 1-0 victories at BMO Field and a 2-0 win in the last clash. NYRB’s last seven matches consecutively have brought over 2.5 goals even though they have been slow starters, which bodes well for The Reds who have had the ball in the net before half time in eight of their last ten home games.
A potent strike-force
Former Swansea City and Real Betis attack-minded midfielder, Alejandro Pozuelo is having the best season of his career, now aged 27, having been involved in 16 goals in 17 appearances in MLS. He is joint sixth in the scoring charts with eight, closely followed by vastly experienced MLS operator Jozy Altidore who has six goals and three assists thus far. Toronto FC’s second all-time top scorer, with 66 strikes in 124 appearances, a bulldozing front man who won the whole shebang with the Reds in 2017. Just 17 goals behind all-time top scorer, Sebastian Giovinco, at 29 years old he will have his sights set on etching his name in the franchises’ history.
Red Bulls talisman
Ever-reliable forward, Daniel Royer, will be one of the biggest threats for the visitors, three goals in his last two games, the Austrian will also have faith in his supporting cast with the team having registered a goal in all but one of their last 14 outings. Royer has seven goals and six assists this season and is very effective coming in from wide positions, and so is one to keep an eye on in the very even affair that lies ahead of us.
Toronto FC will stop the rot and carry on the momentum from their impressive win and clean sheet last time out. It will be a challenge, but I am confident they can get a positive result in hosting the third-placed New York Red Bulls.

Toronto had far too much for the Red Bulls, Jozy Altidore and Alejandro Pozuelo put the hosts 2-0 up at half time. But it ended 3-1, making this tip a loss by one goal.
