Canadian rivals meet as Toronto face Montreal
It’s an all Canadian match-up in the MLS on Wednesday as Montreal travel to Toronto for the second time in just over a week. Can the Reds make it back-to-back sweeps in quick succession? Have a read of our preview here:
Toronto off to a flying start
The win on Saturday against Montreal came off the back of a double-header against another Canadian side, the Vancouver Whitecaps, both of which the Reds won without conceding.
Toronto have now kept five clean-sheets in 10 games and three in a row heading into Wednesday’s game with the Impact.
Greg Vanney will be delighted with the way his side have played so far this season, especially defensively. They have won five of their nine games, losing just once and could be a side with a great chance this year.
The key man has been Spanish creator Alejandro Pozuelo, who has created a team-high 14 chances so far during the campaign.
Goals have been flowing from multiple players thus far with Ayo Akinola, Richie Laryea and Pablo Piatti all with more than one goal to their name in the early offing.
It will be interesting to see if they can stay the course, but another win over a Canadian rival would be more than welcome.
Lack of impact hurting Montreal
Montreal have not got going this season. They lack consistency, threat and find themselves already off the pace.
With four defeats, three wins and a draw in their opening eight games, they are not completely out of the picture but will be desperate to cut out the errors at the back while also taking their chances at the other end.
Five of their eight games have seen only one of the teams score, just to highlight their already up and down fortunes, two of those have ended in Montreal’s favour while the other three have not.
Managed by Arsenal legend Thierry Henry and owned by the ambitious Joey Saputo, you sense this average start will improve as the season moves along.
Toronto are a tough cookie to crack and Montreal will be sick of the sight of them as they prepare to take on their rivals three times in just over 10 days. They will want to avoid the sweep but may have to be patient to take three points off the Reds.
