Sweden justify favourites tag in Olympics final
The Women’s Olympics final takes place this Friday, as standout side Sweden prepare to take on Canada. The outsider Canadians however will be brimming with confidence having knocked out neighbours USA at the semi final stage. Sweden have a 100 per cent record so far in the tournament and come into the final as odds on favourites to take the Olympic Gold. Their results have been impeccable thus far, however anything can happen on a one game basis, Canada will fancy their chances and enjoy the underdog tag.
Background
Stina Blackstenius is the Swedes’ top scorer, bagging against USA, Australia and hosts Japan. The favourites more for their last win than the previous four that followed it, potentially some final hurdle nerves but they got over the line, beating Australia 1-0 thanks to a 46th minute goal from Fridolina Rolfo. Rolfo is their second top scorer, with the 27-year-old chipping in with three goals and two assists. If Rolfo and Blackstenius are onsong it will be a lot for Canada to contend with.
The Canadians have not been as invincible in the lead up to the final, sharing 1-1 scorelines with Japan and Great Britain in the group stage and a penalty shootout win over Brazil in the quarter finals. Suggesting they are there to be got at and breached slightly more than you could say about the Swedes on what we have to go off at the Olympics.
Janine Beckie is one to keep an eye on for the underdogs, the 26-year-old Manchester City forward showcased her abilities with a brace in a group stage win over Chile. The only player in the side with more than one direct goal involvement in the competition.
Sweden are rightful favourites and provide a bit of value given their relentless win streak. Canada will leave everything out there but in terms of quality they have a mountain to climb.
