Cautious CL curtain raiser
Julien Naglesmann’s impressive young RB Leipzig outfit host, yes host, Liverpool at the Puskas Arena in Budapest tomorrow evening. Jurgen Klopp will feel he has a point to prove against a German side and exciting manager with his Reds suffering some poor form of late, recording three straight losses in the Premier League. Both sides are struggling in their mission to contend for domestic titles and therefore this match comes at a good time particularly for the visitors, to take their fans’ minds away from their shortcomings. With their rich history in the competition including winning it in 2018/19, the Reds come in as narrow favourites but it is a hesitant price and so I am looking for a goals angle to find value.
Considerations
Initially I was looking to oppose goals using the Asian Goal Line however, despite these two teams potent attacking contingents, under three goals was too short to excite me. I can see this match panning out quite timidly to begin with, a lot of first leg ties do, as Liverpool seek a foothold in the game well aware of their defensive woes in recent weeks. Leipzig top the Bundesliga in terms of expected goals and in that may come in as value outsiders for this fixture, however seeking value the Asian Handicap market was tough, the bookies really are on the money in these high profile matches. Leipzig with a +0.5 and +0.75 start are all too short so I have plumped for a shorter goals based angle which I think looks a good cautious play.
Goals?
For me it is about when the first goal comes as for whether this first leg really ignites or not, I trust the likes of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane to show up as big game players.
- Leipzig have scored in 10 of 10.
- Leipzig have conceded in four of 10.
- Leipzig have seen both teams score in four of 10.
- Leipzig have seen over 2.5 goals in seven of 10.
- Liverpool have scored in six of 10.
- Liverpool have conceded in nine of 10.
- Liverpool have seen both teams score in six of 10.
- Liverpool have seen over 2.5 goals in six of 10.
It is a tough one to call and a match that will have large implications for Liverpool, should they fall out of the Champions League their season is an indisputable failure.
