Stuttering Leipzig face third-placed Gladbach
The late kick off in the Bundesliga’s 20th round of fixtures this Saturday sees the division’s pace setters in Red Bull Leipzig take on former league leaders Borussia Monchengladbach at Red Bull Arena. Two clubs differing a lot in terms of history and Bundesliga pedigree face off for the eighth time ever with Julian Nagelsmann’s side having never lost to their visitors. Winning the last four head-to-heads on the bounce should stand the hosts in very good stead, despite their title race provoking loss last time out, they come into this one as strong favourites.
Recent form
Leipzig’s 2-0 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt last Saturday ended a nine-match unbeaten run and a streak of getting on the scoresheet in 17 consecutive outings. They have been mightily impressive in front of their home crowd of late, being victorious on the last five occasions, winning by two or more goals on each occasion, though interestingly they are prone to allowing the visitors a foothold.
Both teams have scored in four of the last five matches at Red Bull Arena and in nine of Leipzig’s last 11 overall. In their last two home games they have let in the opening goal within 10 mins of kick off, giving Gladbach some belief in what on paper should be a tough evening.
The Foals have been poor away from home this season, somewhat curtailing their title push. They have failed to score in three of their last four trips however have been alright on the defensive front. Gladbach have failed to win their last four games on the road and have the league’s lowest average total goals, at just 2.11. In that time, they are yet to concede more than twice on their travels this campaign and have won all three times they have broken the deadlock.
Timo Werner Vs Alassane Plea
The latter is a 26-year-old French forward having a coming of age season under Marco Rose. Plea has managed 12 goal involvements often leading the line for the third placed side and has been crucial in bringing in other exciting attackers like Patrick Herrmann and Marcus Thuram. He got a brace in the last game, helping his side comeback from conceding the opener to a comfortable 3-1 win over Mainz at Borussia-Park.
However, the danger man for this matchup has to be Timo Werner. The German pacey striker has stood out as a potentially world class striker this season and looks set for a move to a European superpower in the summer. Still only 23, Wernerhas already hit 20 goals and six assists in Leipzig’s title bid and will be crucial to them maintaining a challenge to Bayern Munich’s crown, who are hot on their heels in second only one point behind.
In theory, RB Leipzig should be too strong, however judging off their last showing it will be tough and Gladbach have the quality to hurt them at any moment.
