Club Brugge to seal Europa in Paris?
Paris Saint-Germain play host to Club Brugge on the final matchday of the Champions League group stage with second placed already their guaranteed finish in Group A. However, there is a lot at stake with a spot in the Europa League up for grabs for one of RB Leipzig and Club Brugge. The visitors took a point off of PSG in the reverse fixture and were victorious away to Jesse Marsch’s RB Leipzig and if they can better the result of the German team who face Manchester City then they will achieve a surprise third placed finish in the group. The Belgian champions are huge outsiders for this clash, but may have a slight edge with a lot more riding on the fixture than the Parisians.
Background
The fact that it really does not matter for the bigger picture how PSG get on in this match may see Mauricio Pochettino shuffle his pack a little. Although, with PSG already 11 points clear at the top of Ligue 1 they do tend to use the Champions League to look to send messages to the rest of the European powers.
Hans Vanaken grabbed the goal for the Belgians in the reverse fixture, cancelling out Ander Herrera’s opener and going to be arguably the better side in an encounter where they were even bigger outsiders. That match should give them plenty of belief in the French capital, in comparison Leipzig lost 6-3 away to Manchester City in their previous encounter.
It is refreshing to have more eyes on the smaller clubs in the group going into the final matchday, a spot in the Europa League would mean a lot financially for Club Brugge and RB Leipzig would go in as one of the favourites to win the tournament.
Goals?
Not my angle for this encounter but there are still some numbers worth looking at.
- PSG have scored in eight of ten.
- PSG have conceded in eight of ten.
- PSG have seen both teams score in eight of ten.
- PSG have seen over 2.5 goals in seven of ten.
- Club Brugge have scored in nine of ten.
- Club Brugge have conceded in nine of ten.
- Club Brugge have seen both teams score in eight of ten.
- Club Brugge have seen over 2.5 goals in nine of ten.
The Parisians are enormous favourites but I would like to get against them having nothing to play for. With this selection, we can only lose if PSG win by two or more goals. A draw would likely be enough for Club Brugge to seal Europa League football.
