Lions to roar once more

Both Millwall and Brighton will put their respective relegation fears to one side this weekend with a day out at Wembley the reward for the winner.

Lions have the taste for it

Runners-up in’04, Semi-finalists in ‘13 and quarter finalists just two seasons ago, Neil Harris’ side know all about a good cup run.

It’s a competition which seems to bring out the best in Millwall and the Lions are at it again.

Seeing off Hull and AFC Wimbledon in rounds three and five would’ve been expected in truth but it’s the fourth-round giantkilling of Everton which lit the FA Cup flame for Millwall once more.

To win the way they did - defender Murray Wallace capped a fine comeback with a last gasp winner to send The Den into ecstasy - and against Premier League opposition too, really whet the appetite of players and fans alike. And they’re hungry for more!

Out of the frying pan, into the fire

Brighton duo Lewis Dunk and Glenn Murray have spoken of last weekend’s ‘M23 Derby’ standing Albion in good stead ahead of the hostilities served up at The Den. He’s half right but in actual fact, the rivalries exchanged at Selhurst won’t even come close.

The Den isn’t a place you want to for your Sunday lunch, that’s for sure with the supporters renowned for being not the most welcoming of folk, shall we say.

As Everton discovered, the volatile and intimidating atmosphere generated can impact hugely on which way the game - and a refereeing decision - can swing!

Contrasting views

Chris Hughton has made his priorities clear - Premier League survival comes before any run in the cup, a factor which is likely to see the Seagulls boss field several squad players ahead of his favoured first XI - this is despite having two weeks until their next PL game by the way!

In the opposing dugout sits former Lions striker Neil Harris who while appreciative of his side’s battle to preserve their Championship status, is also aware of the momentum and positivity that accompanies a cup run and a trip to Wembley.

That home record

Millwall’s record on home turf has been nothing to shout about of late; two draws and three defeats from the last five league games paints the picture.

But their last win? You guessed it - back in January vs. Everton in this very tournament. And if you go further back you’ll find the hosts are unbeaten in their last 10 FA Cup games at The Den, winning nine and drawing the other.

It’s an astonishing record that stretches back to 2016 and includes many a Premier League scalp including Leicester, Watford and Bournemouth. Are you thinking what I’m thinking?

Betting tip

Home advantage for Millwall is a huge leveller. The Den will be rocking come 2pm on Sunday and all the ingredients for another giantkilling seem to be there.

With the game to be decided on the day, I’m not ruling out extra time or even pens but Millwall to reach the semis I’m backing at 7/5 (2.40) with Betway.
