PSG to get back on track against Ligue 2 champions
Ninth hosts fourth place in the opening game of this weekend’s fourth round of Ligue 1 fixtures, as newly promoted Metz welcome reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain to Stade Saint-Symphorien. Metz opened their account in the league by winning in their last home match, convincingly 3-0 against 2016/17 champions Monaco, building the fortress home record that helped them win Ligue 2 last season will be crucial to maintaining their topflight status this time around. However, with their recent head-to-head record against PSG is scary reading.
Recent form
It could be a thriller with their last seven meetings averaging 4.43 goals per game with PSG winning on all seven of those occasions scoring three or more in each encounter. A damning statistic for the current Metz squad but more adding to the challenge. Metz have opened the scoring in their last 11 home league games, although all but one of those were in Ligue 2. Also finding the net within 20 minutes in their last four at home. Thomas Tuchel’s men have got on the scoresheet in 35 of their last 36 Ligue 1 away games, the records certainly stand the Paris based side in good stead for this one.
Early season fortunes
Metz will be pleased with their start back in Ligue 1. They got a solid point away to last season’s cup winners Strasbourg on the opening day and followed that up with a resounding 3-0 victory over Monaco, thanks to Renaud Cohade and a brace from Habibou Diallo. Four points from four is a reasonable start with anything being a bonus from this upcoming matchup. PSG lost their only away game of this season so far losing 2-1 to Rennes of whom they have a poor recent head-to-head record against. However, they were back in fine order at the Parc des Princes last weekend with Cameroon international Maxim Choupo-Moting popping up with a brace.
With the Neymar transfer set to be decided very soon I would expect the French champions to kick on when the dust has settled. The favourites for the title who have won it by such a margin in the last two seasons should easily pull apart a Metz side who are still getting back into the swings of things in the division.
PSG will flex their muscle and condemn Metz to a heavy defeat and keep their strong away record going. They will not create as many chances as they did against Toulouse but there be plenty for Edinson Cavani, Kylian Mbappe and co to feed off.
