Valiant Flamengo to push Reds in losing battle
Liverpool look to seal a trophy they have never won before in 127 years of history, as they face off with South American champions Flamengo for the Club World Cup Final. Flamengo played in the Brazilian Serie A and won the Copa Libertadores, coming from behind to take the title 2-1 against River Plate. Inter Milan loanee Gabriel Barbosa scored a post-89th minute brace to steal the crown from River Plate that day and they will be spurred on by the underdog tag on Saturday.
The European representatives struggled for extended periods against Monterreyin the semi-final but managed to come through as they always seem to do from a familiarly superb assist by Trent Alexander-Arnold. Super sub Roberto Firmino it was who got the final touch as Liverpool kick on towards the crown. In form Malian midfielder Naby Keita grabbed his fourth goal in five starts for club and country as the Reds took the lead with ease, it did not go to plan however with some irony. Just two minutes later than were pegged back by a former Everton player’s brother in Monterrey forward Rogelio Funes Mori who scrambled the ball past Alisson Becker.
Gabigol
Barbosa’s new nickname, the Brazilian beast has Internazionale, Benfica and Santos all on his CV at the tender age of 23 and has shown his talent and potential in flashes. In a prolific career the striker only managed one league goal on European shores, having joined the Serie A giants in 2016, since then though and this season in particular he has proven that he is a big game player and what better stage to send a message back to his parent club is there than the Fifa Club World Cup? Liverpool’s shaky defence to which had not kept a clean sheet for 13 matches going into their first Premier League game of this month, will have to be switched on throughout to contain him.
Trent Alexander-Arnold
The team of the season right back has been a shining star of Liverpool’s success in the last few seasons, providing assist after assist to which he inflicted so timely against Monterrey. Despite his outstanding consistency and attacking contributions at club level he still has a point to prove in cementing a starting berth in Gareth Southgate’s England 11 for the upcoming European Championships. He is favourite for the jersey but perceived defensively stronger players like Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Kieran Trippier are breathing down his neck, this title would be another string to his bow going forward.
Flamengo will battle admirably but the Liverpool attack and pace of their play will come through eventually.
