Kosovo to challenge Czech Republic in first battle
Relative UEFA new boys Kosovo welcome the Czech Republic to their shores in the first ever meeting between the two nations. The visitors sit one point and one position above them, currently runners-up in Group A and come into this one as narrow favourites however the outsiders from Eastern Europe have been punching well above their weight ever since their recent introduction to international football. A feisty affair is in the offing with so much to play for in this fourth round of group fixtures for these two.
Recent form
Somewhat defying the odds Kosovo have built a 14-game unbeaten run coming into this encounter, with both teams getting on the scoresheet in all of their last four matches along the way. The more experienced Czechs have won six of their last eight European qualifiers on foreign soil with over 2.5 goals being produced in their last four on the trot. The hosts have also managed to find the net in their last nine matches consecutively, this is an intriguing matchup.
Kosovo’s key men
As their player pool continues to grow Kosovo have a very widely dispersed squad with players applying their trade in England, Italy, Germany and many more. One creative midfielder who has caught the eye playing the English Championship in the last two seasons in Bersant Celina, the 22-year-old was brought in by current Brighton & Hove Albion manager Graham Potter in the summer of 2018 and has endeared himself to the Swansea City faithful in his time at the club. A versatile proposition who can be deployed on the left or right but is stronger in attacking midfield has contributed 10 goals and eight assists in his time so far at the Liberty Stadium however he is yet to play a direct part in a goal for his country.
Up and coming goalkeeper Ante Muric is one to keep an eye on in this match, the 20-year-old is also in the Championship on loan to former European Cup winners Nottingham Forest from Premier League champions Manchester City. For a young keeper Muric is excellent at dominating his area and couples that with great distribution with his ability to throw the ball out to the wings and start attacks from the back. He is sure to be a successful shot stopper with a big future at international level.
Czech Republic are the better side but the atmosphere will be hostile and Kosovo will make it very difficult, in doing so they will probably keep their slim hopes of qualifying for Euro 2020 alive.
