Juventus to turn it around against Lyon
Juventus again walked to the domestic title in Italy but their aim has always been to win the Champions League. Lyon hold a first-leg advantage but will it be enough to see them through? Have a read of our preview here:
Unconvincing Juve not all they appear
Juventus winning the title has been more down to the individual brilliance of certain stars rather than it being a sign of a team well in tune and offering balance.
The Old Lady rather limped over the line to secure their ninth straight Scudetto this season and were by no means the best footballing side in Italy.
The money they have means they can afford the best individual players and more depth than teams like Lazio who suffered after lockdown to find the momentum they’d had earlier in the season.
For Maurizio Sarri, it was a case of relying on Cristiano Ronaldo and Paulo Dybala to find them a goal or to create something out of nothing. They should consider themselves fortunate to have won the title.
Ronaldo has won the Champions League five times and his pedigree should see them through but Juventus need to improve if they are to actually win the competition.
The eyes of the world will be watching and it remains to be seen whether they will be convinced by the football produced by Italy’s champions.
Lack of game time could cost Lyon dearly
Lyon come into this match with a 1-0 lead from the first-leg and you get the feeling they will need it.
The French side have a huge disadvantage having not played any competitive football since Ligue 1 was cancelled and PSG handed the title.
Rudi Garcia does have a well-rested squad of players which could help but against a Juventus side that have depth and quality it still looks a difficult task.
Memphis Depay could be back for this one, he is a key man and Moussa Dembele will also be needed, but the truth is there are few people who can see Lyon getting through to the next round.
May they all prove us wrong.
