Juve to reach cloud nine against Lazio on Tuesday
Juventus are so close to another title they can smell it. The team that was closest to them, Lazio, have fallen away badly but can they keep Atalanta’s hopes alive by beating Sarri’s men on Monday? Have a read of our preview here:
Juve close to cloud nine
Maurizio Sarri has never won a title anywhere. He did bag the Europa League with Chelsea and came mighty close with Napoli, but this is beginning to look as though it will be his time to claim the Scudetto.
It has, however, been anything other than convincing. If it were not for the individual brilliance of Cristiano Ronaldo and Paulo Dybala, things could be a lot closer.
It is by no means done and dusted. Atalanta are chasing hard and should have beaten the Old Lady when they met recently and would have if it were not for two phantom penalty decisions.
Juve’s seven-point lead should be enough to get them over the line even if they haven’t played well in recent matches. They have to play Udinese, Sampdoria and Cagliari before ending the season at home to Roma.
They are not particularly difficult fixtures for a team with as much talent as the Bianconeri, but Sarri will not want to take any chances considering the relentless form of Atalanta and the lingering presence of Inter, just six points behind the leaders.
Nine straight titles should be the reward for Juve’s work this season, but with it will die the soul of Italian football for another season. Much as in the French Ligue 1 and German Bundesliga, the appearance of a title race is becoming an all too familiar illusion.
Lack of depth bring Lazio’s demise
Lazio’s title win under Sven Goran-Eriksson came during a time of unprecedented spending by the club – it ended very badly.
This season they have pushed Juve very hard but after returning from the COVID lockdown, it became clear very quickly that Lazio were going to struggle to keep up the pace of their previous form.
Defeats have been coming thick and fast with Atalanta, AC Milan, Lecce and, most recently, Sassuolo taking three points off Simone Inzaghi’s side.
A draw with Udinese stopped the rot of three straight wins but they are slipping down the table quickly but should easily hold onto a Champions League spot at least.
A sad end to what could have been a great season, but many positives can still be taken from the campaign.
Juventus v Lazio betting tip
Lazio have fallen off a cliff since the return of football and there have been few positives for the Biancocelesti so it is hard to go with anything other than a Juventus win at odds of 1.67 with 888sport in this one.
