Midweek classic brewing in Milan
Both of these sides recovered from winless midweeks to get back to winning ways in Serie A at the weekend and are sitting in second and third, leaving this fixture perfectly poised with each of them looking to put the pressure on AC Milan at the summit. Napoli’s draw with La Liga table toppers Real Sociedad saw them win their group in the Europa League, whereas a frustrating goalless draw with Shakhtar Donetsk had Inter rock bottom in the Champions League. The sooner Antonio Conte can rid the fan base of European disappointment the better and a win here would go a long way to refocusing them on his team’s pursuit of a first Scudetto since 2009/10, this season looking like we could see an end to Juventus’ run of nine straight league titles.
Process
The visitors’ data stands out as overperformers in front of goal. They got it together late on in their 2-1 victory over Sampdoria last time out, but their underlying numbers this term have not been of a club expected to compete for the league title. They have scored 26 goals, the second most in the division, from 18.3 expected goals, an overachievement of 7.7 goals, simply unsustainable. Inter have not been all that inspiring defensively but they will fancy their chances at blunting Gennaro Gattuso’s men.
Defensively they have been impressive, Kostas Manolas and Kalidou Koulibaly’s partnership is flourishing far more than it did in 2019/20. They have been a tad unlucky to let in 11 goals from 9.1 expected goals, the third best expected goals against figures in Serie A.
Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez complete the most potent strikeforce in Italy, heavily contributing to Conte’s side being the league’s top scorers, slamming home 29 goals from 26.2 expected. An overperformance in itself but not as alarming as that of Napoli. They sit seventh in terms of defensive numbers, such that they will need to improve if they are to compete for the Scudetto. They are the bookies favourites.
Goals?
- Inter have scored in eight of 10.
- Inter have conceded in eight of 10.
- Inter have seen both teams score in seven of 10.
- Inter have seen over 2.5 goals in seven of 10.
- Napoli have scored in nine of 10, including their last nine on the bounce.
- Napoli have conceded in six of 10.
- Napoli have seen both teams score in five of 10.
- Napoli have seen over 2.5 goals in five of 10.
As is the nature of Serie A this season, goals looks likely in this match. Despite Gattuso’s men’s unsustainable attacking numbers, it is hard to see them drawing a blank considering they have scored in nine in a row with Inter conceding in eight of 10.
Gli Azzurri have big game players in that front three and will cause Inter problems. But it must be said, the hosts are the stronger side and a more reliable punt.

Somehow, Napoli created over three expected goals but drew a blank. We have been unlucky here. 1-0 Inter.
