Conte's Inter to press on by beating Lazio
Antonio Conte’s Inter Milan welcome Lazio to the San Siro this Wednesday night looking to continue their excellent start to the Serie A season after a momentum building 2-0 victory in the Milan derby last time out.
The spotlight will very much be on the battle between two quality number nines in the form of Ciro Immobile and Romelu Lukaku who both reside towards the top end of the scoring charts. Last season home advantage went out the window with Inter running out 3-0 winners at the Stadio Olimpico and Lazio snatching a surprise 1-0 scalp in the reverse fixture in early 2019.
European football
Both sides got their European campaigns underway last week with disappointing results that could lead to this match being tinkered with by the managers. Internazionale have a tough couple of away matches on the horizon with a trip to Sampdoria at the weekend followed closely by the mammoth task of visiting the Camp Nou in the Champions League next Wednesday. It will be interesting to see how Conte shuffles his pack in tackling these three games in a week, especially after their poor result in the opener.
Conte will be prioritising a strong league campaign
The league leaders have a Nicolo Barella stoppage time equaliser to thank for their first point in Europa League Group F securing a 1-1 draw at home to pot 4 side Slavia Prague on matchday one. A bit of a setback considering they have Borussia Dortmund to come in the group stage who always punch above their weight in the competition.
Simone Inzaghi’s side had a Europa League calamity struggling to acclimatise for their tough trip to Romania, losing 2-1 to CFR Cluj. Lazio have relatively easier fixtures following this one in comparison, as they host Genoa and then Rennes next week. Overall, I think in team selection both managers and particularly Conte will be prioritising a strong league campaign and therefore will not worry too much about resting players for their busy weeks in this encounter.
Lukaku vs. Immobile
The new kid on the block in the big Belgian will have his work cut out upstaging an experienced proven Serie A goal machine in Immobile. The 29-year-old has buried 67 league goals for the White and Sky Blues over the last three seasons and has hit the ground running once again with four in as many games thus far. Performing for a side that have not challenged for a Scudetto, his record is incredible. Lukaku’s eventual move to Inter after much negotiation in the summer has started well, with three goals in the league, working hard to fill the large shoes left behind by loaned out striker Mauro Icardi. Both sets of defenders will have a tough evening ahead.
Inter will continue their 100% record to five straight Serie A wins and find a way to beat Lazio who will play their part in a very tight match.
