Bookies underestimating Pompey at the KCOM
The promotion races in the English Football League are always tight and last season, even amidst a season suspension, League One was by far the most intense. With clubs even outside the top half in touching distance of a playoff push if they could put a good run together at the right time. After a slow start to the season, Portsmouth look to be one of the more consistent teams in the division, maybe not the best based on raw ability, but their base level is certainly up there and they have proven this in seasons gone by, losing out in the playoff semi finals in the last two campaigns. Having kept hold of their best players in the likes of Tom Naylor and Ronan Curtis for this term, the goal is clear and Kenny Jackett has the experience and nous to win promotion. They travel to league leaders Hull City as surprise outsiders this Friday evening.
Midweek
Both of these sides have difficult matches on Tuesday evening to contend with before this top of the table clash. Hull travel to an inform Blackpool side who have beaten Pompey and their Tuesday night opponents, who also were defeated playoff semi finalists in 2019/20, Fleetwood Town in recent weeks. Having hit a slightly sticky patch in recent weeks this is a big ask of Grant McCann’s Tigers and I am certain that they would be content with a point.
Pompey host Fleetwood as mentioned, which may look on paper like a tough encounter, which it is without a doubt, but I would argue is the easier of the two matches. Probably a less taxing affair going into their trip to Hull than that of McCann’s men.
Recent form
Hull sit first and Pompey are third, but the last few weeks tell a different story that could have a large impact on proceedings. The Tigers have failed to score in their last two games, including a 1-0 home loss to relegation threatened Shrewsbury Town last time out. Whereas Pompey have won their last three matches all accompanied by a clean sheet, they have got it together very impressively after conceding at least once for nine matches on the spin.
- Hull have scored in eight of 10, but not in their last two.
- Hull have conceded in five of 10.
- Hull have seen both teams score in four of 10.
- Hull have seen over 2.5 goals in four of 10.
- Pompey have scored in eight of 10.
- Pompey have conceded in seven of 10, but not in their last three.
- Pompey have seen both teams score in five of 10.
- Pompey have seen over 2.5 goals in five of 10.
There is big value in getting on side with Pompey, I am pleasantly surprised they are outsiders and would expect their price to shorten as the week progresses.
