Klinsmann to have no answers to Flick's Bayern
A rejuvenated Hertha Berlin host Bayern Munich at the picturesque Olympiastadion Berlin on Sunday afternoon to conclude the first round of Bundesligafixtures back after the winter break. Hertha have seen an upturn in form since appointing Jurgen Klinsmann as manager in late November after the dismissal of Ante Covic, they have picked eight points from his five matches in charge, keeping clean sheets in their last three outings. Though the spotlight is all on Hansi Flick’s Bayern in this one, they are expected to claw their way back to retaining the title for an eighth successive season, yet the rampant form of Red Bull Leipzig suggests it is to be an uphill battle.
Jurgen Klinsmann
The enigmatic sports personality that is Klinsmann came to Hertha with his managerial reputation at all time low following his unsuccessful reign as USAnational team manager, failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. The Old Lady have struggled to challenge in the top half in recent seasons and so pulling in a big name like Klinsmann was risk from the board.
So far so good, losing his opening match in charge 2-1 at home to Borussia Dortmundwas a blow but the squad have stuck together to go into the break four games unbeaten. A memorable 1-0 win at Bayer Leverkusen backed up by a goalless draw with title challenging Borussia Monchengladbach putting them firmly inside the top half of the form table for the last five results.
Vladimir Darida
The Czech Republic skipper is a versatile midfielder is in his fifth season with club and despite having mostly defensive responsibilities, has achieved six goal involvements this term. The 29-year-old got the winner in their last home victory, which was Klinsmann’s first overall, he is a classic engine roomer who keeps possession ticking over brilliantly, building attacks from the base of midfield.
His performance will be crucial to Hertha having any joy in this matchup, looking to combat the running and on the ball skill of the likes of Joshua Kimmichand Philippe Coutinho in the middle of the park for the Bavarians.
Joshua Zirkzee
Not a name many would be familiar with at the start of this campaign, the Dutch forward has been applying his trade mainly in the German third tier with Bayern Munich II, only managing four goals in 26 games.
Yet he has taken to first team action in electric form having only accumulated eight minutes of Bundesliga action across two super sub appearances, the 18-year-old has hit the back of the net twice, that is a goal every four minutes on average. Stupid numbers but it will interesting to see if he is involved once more on Sunday having played half in a warm-up game with Nurnberg last week.
Hertha will be hard to breakdown, but Bayern are in such immense form in front of goal, netting 14 in their last four games, they will be able to control the match and take all three points from the capital.
