A high-scoring Gold Cup semi-final in store
Two teams that throw caution to the wind and play very easy on the eye free flowing attacking football meet in the first semi-final of the 2019 Gold Cup. They have not played in almost 10 years with a lot of pressure on the shoulders of tournament favourites Mexico who struggled in their quarter-final having scraped through on penalties. The tournaments’ dark horse in Haiti will fancy their chances though they will be underdogs in pulling off an upset, having won every match of their campaign thus far.
Haiti’s spirit
This Haitian side refuse to lie down, having comeback from being 2-0 down at half time in their quarter-final victory over Canada. Some clinical finishing saw them convert everyone of their shots on target in the second half to turn the tie on its head and run out 3-2 winners. Not fancied against Canada they will not be taken lightly by Mexico who were pushed all the way by a Costa Rica side who Haiti beat 2-1 in the group stage, once again coming from a goal behind. They did the same against Bermuda in the opening game with a Frantzdy Pierrot double seeing them make the perfect start. The prospect of Mexico is by far their biggest challenge yet, though they are used to the underdog tag and will be raring to go.
Recent form
Les Grenadiers have scored two or more goals in every match of the tournament, they have also only conceded more than once on one occasion with three one goal wins and one two goal victory. Both the goals they let in against Canada came within 10 minutes of each other suggesting they could be vulnerable after initially conceding.
Mexico are on a great run, having won their last eight if you include the penalty shoot-out victory over Costa Rica, averaging 3.38 goals per game in that streak. Though defensively they are not so solid with just the one clean sheet in those eight matches. Wolves striker Raul Jimenez has scored four goals in as many games and will be their main threat in this fixture.
Haiti have not managed a draw in their last 14 encounters with seven of Mexico’s last eight games bringing over 3.5 goals, this one could be a thriller.
Pressure
The weight of expectation is far greater on this Mexico side who are big favourites to win the Gold Cup, and with them coming so close to losing to Costa Rica, they will need an improved performance to beat Haiti, who are in better shape than they have ever been as a national team.
There could be a lot of toing and froing with both sides best suit being in the offensive department, though ultimately, I believe Mexico have the experience to get them over the line.
