Business as usual as Germany begin with a win
Die Mannschaft are expected to take the lead in Group F with a win against Mexico. The Germans are pragmatic and will do whatever it takes to succeed against Mexico and take the 3 points.
Germany
As usual the Germans are among the favourites this year, and as usual the Germans go to Russia with a wide range of options. Leaving Man City starlet Leroy Sané behind to go on holiday has been a big talking point. Even if their are tactical and sporting reasons behind the decision to leave Sané at home, it just shows how the Germans have the luxury to pick and choose amongst a number of gifted players at their disposal.
They should’ve hung the Saudis out to dry, leaving no stone unturned
Germany have also been on the receiving end of criticism after a weak performance in their pre-tournament friendly against Saudi Arabia. They should’ve hung the Saudis out to dry, leaving no stone unturned. But it wasn’t to the case after an average 2-1 victory. Was it trouble amongst the troops or simply a lack of motivation in a meaningless friendly match?
It remains to be seen, but it would be surprising if Germany weren’t up for this one to show they mean business in defending their title. Neuer is only just coming back from a long term foot injury and will be important to the team for a number of reasons as captain. The inclusion of up and comer Timo Werner is a big plus for the team. However, key playmaker Mesut Özil is now a doubt after picking up an injury against Austria. Although his position is arguably the easiest fix with Kroos potentially stepping in.
Mexico
The Mexicans are showing up to the World Cup with high expectations of advancing through the knockout stages. Moving on from the group stage hasn’t been a problem in the past, but they’ve failed to make it past the round of 16 in the last five World Cups. The tough question right now is - where do Mexico stand right now?
The worry is on the attacking side and it’s uncertain where the goals will come from
In qualifying they did well building on a strong and stable defence but it’s well known that they don’t really have any challenging opposition in the North & Central American qualifying group. I’m certain that Mexico will display a tight defensive outfit, but the worry is on the attacking side and it’s uncertain where the goals will come from.
Mexico haven’t been especially prolific goalscorers in friendlies or in qualifying. Players like Giovani dos Santos and Carlos Vela haven’t been on fire either recently. Javier “Chicarito” Hernandez is capable of great things, but it’s well-known that he hasn’t been doing the job for West Ham this season. Hirving Lozano is a bit of a wild card but goals for his club side PSV Eindhoven helped them lift this year’s title, and have earned a spot in the national team for the tournament.
Betting Tip
Germany should be considered as strong favourites and will most likely start the group with a stable victory which will give coach Joachim Löw and his team opportunities to experiment in the coming games. Mexico have a skilful side and will definitely give the Germans a match but who is going to get them the goals?
I’m going for a Germany win with under 4.5 goals for 4/6 (1.67) odds with Betfair.
