England to kick off Euro 2022 with winning start
Hosts England kick off Euro 2022 at Old Trafford tonight. Expectations are high that on home soil, Sarina Wiegman can lead the Lionesses to glory, but they are not the only side in the tournament with such pretensions. They must first navigate the opener and hold their nerve against an Austria outfit that will want to make an impact under the floodlights. Read our preview here:
All White on the night
Having won the competition in charge of Netherlands in 2017, Wiegman has the know-how and experience, as well as the pressure that comes with it, for a repeat five years later at a different nation. The home side have won their last six matches in preparation for the big stage by a goal difference of +28, and Manchester City striker Ellen White will lead the line in Stretford. The 33 year old is second only to midfielder Jill Scott in terms of caps accrued, and should spearhead a side that will include Lucy Bronze, who recently joined Barcelona and is recovering from a knock.
Dunst's new mettle
Irene Fuhrmann's charges don't have the weight of much expectation behind them, but should still be competitive in their group. Goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger and right-back Laura Wienroither will come up against a number of their Arsenal teammates for the opposing team, and box-to-box dynamo Barbara Dunst will be crucial in ensuring the visitors aren't overrun in the middle of the park.
Betting tip
England have the quality to win, even if nerves are apparent. Austria won't simply roll over though, so odds of 2.85 for both teams to score in a triumph for the Lionesses seem astute.
