Can Gorodeya make it three in three in Minsk?
Gorodeya travel to Minsk to face high flying Energetik-BGU who currently occupy second position in the Belarusian Premier League. The Students come into this one off the back of their first defeat of the season at the weekend, a 2-0 loss away to Torpedo Zhodino. There opponents on Thursday afternoon get themselves on the correct side of a ‘to nil’ scoreline, recording their second 1-0 victory in successive matches, claiming the scalp of Dinamo Minsk. The results of gameweek four may spur on the hosts to put away last season’s seventh placed finishers in putting the pressure back on Zhodino at the summit.
Recent form
Oleg Radushko’s visitors have turned their fortunes around abruptly already this campaign, instilling plenty of belief in the squad having lost their opening two matches to Vitebsk and Shakhtyor Soligorsk. They are still one goal into the negative goal difference having only found the net twice, and yet seemingly come into this matchup with a bit more wind in their sails than second placed Energetik-BGU.
The Students can take plenty of positives from Saturday’s game, it was the individual ability and creativity of Gabriel Ramos that was the difference between the two. They have outshot the hosts 12 to 10 and had more dangerous attacks, unsurprisingly it was the second half display that was the most abject, only registering a single shot on target and conceding three compared to none in the first period.
Gorodeya grinded out their 1-0 win over Dinamo Minsk, Sergey Arkhipov converted a spot kick on 14 minutes, and they held on from there without a single shot in the second period. This resilience and defensive organisation will stand them in good stead in travelling to second place. That notion making the under market look a lot more appetising in this encounter.
One to watch
Serbian forward Lazar Sajcic was the match winner in the game that got the ball rolling for Gorodeya in 2020, a 66th minute strike against newly promoted Belshina Bobruisk on the road. In doing so the 23-year-old equaled his total for the 2019 effort and now playing as an attacker he should beat that comfortably. A team player who operated off the left flank in the Dinamo Minsk game suiting the needs of the side more than when he occupied the central forward position the week before.
Gorodeya will give everything to get something from in-form Energetik-BGU and in that be very tough to break down off the back of two consecutive clean sheets.
