Scotland to struggle against the Czech Republic
Scotland travel to face the Czech Republic in their second outing in five days as the Nations League returns. Can Steve Clarke’s men get the results they need? Have a read of our preview here:
Czech hopefuls lack strength in depth
The 1996 Czech Republic side may be legendary but it is unlikely to be replicated any time soon. That generation contained some of the greatest players ever produced by the country, with modern sides incomparable.
This current crop of players are good but they lack real quality and depth. Reliant of the prowess of striker Patrik Schick, the Czech Republic will need their experienced players to pull them through.
Captain Vladimir Darida will be vital in the centre of the park. The Hertha Berlin midfielder plays an important role for the team.
Another key player is forward Michael Krmencik. The Club Brugge striker has eight goals in 22 caps for the national team and offers an alternative to Schick in attack.
Sampdoria midfielder Jakub Jankto is the other noteworthy man in midfield, but Scotland should fancy their chances on Tuesday.
Scotland distractions not helpful
The Ollie McBurnie fiasco was not particularly helpful as Steve Clarke prepares for an international double-header.
If you’re unaware, the Sheffield United star was not allowed to play for Scotland after missing two weeks of training due to an infected cut on his leg, however, he played in a Blades friendly after pulling out of the Scotland squad.
It was all a storm in a teacup with playing a pre-season friendly hardly comparable to back-to-back competitive matches on the international stage.
Anyway, that is now behind them and they can gear up for two tricky ties knowing they will be without the talented forward.
Andrew Robertson is clearly the star but he is ably supported by two very strong centre-backs in Liam Cooper and Scott McKenna.
Whether they can find enough going forward is the big question. James Forest is a good player but there are question marks about Lawrence Shankland’s fitness.
If they beat Israel, then that could give them confidence moving onto Tuesday, but Steve Clarke still has his work cut out as Celtic’s demise in the Champions League highlighted only too well.
